Lego fan builds motorised Super Mario Bros. level with 12,000 bricks

Fans of both Nintendo and Lego have been well served for the last few years but if you want to go a step further how about a whole level made out of Lego?

It shouldn’t have been surprising how well Nintendo and Lego have got on together, considering they’re both companies beloved for their family friendly products and barely tolerated for their intense secrecy.

The Lego Super Mario line has been a huge success, with the core sets encouraging kids and adults to construct their own Mario levels and have the Bluetooth Mario minifigure bounce around on them – a sensor in its feet able to tell what bricks it’s landing on.

That concept has now been taken to its logical extreme, with a massive diorama recreating a Super Mario Bros. style level filled with motorised parts that let the various Goombas, Koopas, and Bullet Bills move around the level.

The whole thing is made up of 12,000 bricks in total, with a lot going on under the bonnet, where you can see the creator in the video below describing all the complex moving parts and Technic pieces.

It is still something anyone could make themselves though, if they had all the right bricks, but if it was sold as a set it would cost somewhere around £2,000 (we imagine this one was done by teaming up with other Lego fans, as often happens at these sort of conventions).

Although most of the Super Mario line has been aimed more at kids, with all the sets based around building your own level, there have been a few made specifically for adults, including a brick-built NES and animated TV, a Super Mario 64 ? Block tribute , and a giant animatronic Bowser .

What’s unclear is if Lego has the licence to make Lego sets based on anything other than Mario. Since the relationship seems to have gone so well, you’d assume so but so far the only thing that’s not strictly Super Mario based is a trio of sets based on Luigi’s Mansion .

You would’ve thought Zelda and Animal Crossing, at the very least, had plenty of potential for turning into Lego sets but with the Super Mario Bros. movie out next year Lego are likely to stick with just the current theme for a while longer.
