God Of War developer makes plea to fans after suffering online abuse

Another developer has been forced to make a stand against aggressive fans, after staff working on God Of War Ragnarök were targeted.

It’s understandable that many PlayStation owners have been getting frustrated at the lack of news for God Of War Ragnarök , particularly its release date, but what’s not easy to understand is why they then decide to take out their frustrations on the very people making the game.

Ignoring the fact that, as director Cory Barlog has tried to explain multiple times, the developer has nothing to do with the flow of information about the game, fans have been harassing individual staff members online – to the point where developer Santa Monica Studio has had to make a statement calling for calm.

‘Our fans inspire us, and we understand the passion and desire for more information. But that passion should not be toxic nor come at the expense of any human being’s dignity,’ reads the message. ‘Let’s celebrate our community by treating each other, every gamer and developer alike, with respect.’

Given how many developers have been harassed on social media all this is going to do is drive them away, and ‘fans’ will find it far less easy to interact with the people making their favourite titles.

This was demonstrated earlier in the week when Monkey Island creator Ron Gilbert simply switched off his website Grumpy Gamer , after suffering endless abuse over Return To Monkey Island. The site is back now but comments are not, and they’re likely to stay that way.

Although it is odd that Sony won’t just announce a release date for God Of War Ragnarök, fans have been repeatedly assured that it hasn’t been delayed, so whatever the date is it’s not going to be anything unexpected.

The most recent rumours suggest it will probably be out in November, with November 11 seeming the most likely date based on other games coming out around that time. — Santa Monica Studio – God of War Ragnarök (@SonySantaMonica) July 1, 2022
