PS5 had its best month of the year in April but still got outsold by Nintendo Switch

After months of especially bad stock problems the PS5 saw a resurgence in April, as Lego Star Wars became the best-selling game in Europe.

The Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 have had stock problems ever since they first launched a year and a half ago, but Sony put everything into having more stock over Christmas and that’s meant the console has been especially hard to get hold of this year.

It’s also meant that the Xbox has frequently outsold the PlayStation 5 in both the US and Europe, to the point where Sony’s lead is now believed to be only around 4:3, instead of 2:1. But according to new sales data from Europe they may now be pulling ahead again.

However, that hasn’t stopped the Nintendo Switch from being the best-selling console in Europe during April, with Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga the best-selling game.

According to GSD data almost 290,000 games consoles and 10.8 million games were sold across Europe last month, although that was down 15% from March and from April 2021.

The lack of new software releases hasn’t helped but the drop is primarily because of stock issues, with even the Switch being harder to get than it used to be, thanks to ongoing supply chain problems.

The data from is not complete for all countries and does not include Germany and the UK, the two biggest markets in Europe.

However, a separate UK chart for April shows the same story, with 92,000 consoles sold and a very similar drop of 18% from March 2022.

The only major difference in the UK is that sales of the PlayStation 5 beat the Switch, with Sony’s next gen console seeing a 59% rise from March, even though it’s still down 51% on the same time last year.

The Xbox Series X and S were pushed into third place in the UK, despite being number one in March, as Microsoft’s stock levels fell by 59%.

In other words, the situation is still highly volatile and which console is ahead is purely a question of which has the most stock.

That situation is likely to continue well into next year, with stock rising and falling from month to month but never staying around for long.
