Next PlayStation State of Play is all about third party games – could Final Fantasy 16 be there?

Development on Final Fantasy 16 is apparently been going smoothly yet Square Enix is keeping mum about it (pic: Square Enix)

Since Sony’s last presentation primarily focused on Sony’s first party games, the next one will only feature games from its partners.

Last month’s PlayStation Showcase was a pretty big showing from Sony. Even if you ignore God Of War: Ragnarök getting a proper trailer, it also announced a Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic remake , two Marvel games from Insomniac , and a whole lot more.

While the showcase didn’t just feature upcoming first party games, they were undeniably the focus. So, with the next State of Play, Sony is taking a bit of a backseat and devoting it entirely to its line-up of third party releases for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5.

The livestream on Wednesday, October 27 at 10pm won’t be especially long, running for roughly 20 minutes or so, and will share new details about already announced games. However, Sony does promise a few reveals as well.

The PlayStation Blog announcement obviously doesn’t share any specifics, but if it’s all about games from Sony’s partners, then previous rumours could point to this being where Final Fantasy 16 shows its face again.

Square Enix’s next mainline entry in the role-playing game series has been notably absent ever since it was announced last year. Square Enix attended both E3 2021 and the Tokyo Game Show and didn’t mention Final Fantasy 16 at either of them.

Back in June, an otherwise reliable insider claimed that Final Fantasy 16 would be part of a new State of Play. That unfortunately didn’t happen, but it’s entirely possible that plans changed, and the update was just pushed back a bit.

It would certainly make sense for Square Enix to hold off on any Final Fantasy 16 news until one of Sony’s presentations, considering it’s in development as a PlayStation 5 exclusive.

A lack of updates is normally cause for concern but, according to producer Naoki Yoshida , progress is going smoothly. In June, he said the scenario and voiceover sessions were close to completion.

Admittedly, Final Fantasy 16 isn’t the only game on Square Enix’s to-do list. It has its Final Fantasy spin-off Stranger Of Paradise coming in March (although that’s a multi-platform release), as well as Forspoken , another PlayStation 5 exclusive (it’s also coming to PC).

Since Forspoken got a new trailer at the PlayStation Showcase last month, however, perhaps Square Enix will give audiences a bit of breathing room and wait a bit longer before sharing another update.

The State of Play is scheduled for October 27 at 10pm BST.
