League Of Legends has banned /all chat in games because of toxic players

Riot has taken the extreme step of preventing players from chatting to each other in League Of Legends, unless they’re on the same team.

Although there’s a grey area around Minecraft and Roblox, League Of Legends is generally regarded as the most popular video game in the world, in terms of the number of regular players.

Since it’s also free that means there are millions of people playing it every month, and those players have long held a reputation for being unhelpful and abusive towards newcomers.

The situation has got so bad that Riot is removing the option to chat to everyone at once in public matchmade queues, meaning you’ll only ever be able to talk to teammates – except after a match if you want to.

Since a lot of abuse happens between teammates, with more experienced players complaining about everyone else, that’s not going to solve every problem, but it is an acknowledgement of how toxic League Of Legends’ community can be.

You’ll still be able to see other teams’ emotes and taunts but, as you’d expect, some fans are already up in arms about the decision.

‘While /all chat can be the source of fun social interaction between teams, as well as some good-hearted banter, right now negative interactions outweigh the positives’, wrote director Andrei Van Roon and lead game producer Jeremy Lee in their blog announcing the decision .

‘We’ll evaluate the impact of this change through verbal abuse reports and penalty rates, as well as surveys and direct feedback from you all.’

The feature will be added in update 11.21 and its effects will be closely monitored, with Riot reserving the option to reverse their decision at a later date.

‘We know this sucks for those of you who just want to compliment your lane opponent’s skin or ask for a dance party in Baron pit’, says Riot. ‘But we believe the trade-off is worth it to cut down on the growing negativity /all chat has been creating in your games.’
