Final Fantasy 7 Ever Crisis remakes the remake for mobile

The scope of the Final Fantasy 7 Remake project just got a whole lot bigger with the announcement of two new mobile games.

When Final Fantasy 7 Remake released last year, it quickly became evident that Square Enix has some big plans for the project, beyond just reimaging it with modern graphics.

It was easy to miss after the surprise announcement of Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade but Square Enix also revealed not one but two new mobile games set within the same universe.

First is Final Fantasy 7 Ever Crisis, which at first glance looks like a version of the remake designed for mobile devices, with simpler visuals and a streamlined combat system that’s closer to the classic turn-based system in the original.

But, according to Square Enix , Ever Crisis covers the entire Final Fantasy 7 timeline. So, that’s not just the original game but the Advent Children movie, the prequel games Before Crisis and Crisis Core, and the Dirge Of Cerberus spin-off.

Between this and elements of Dirge Of Cerberus set to appear in the Yuffie DLC, it looks like Square Enix is trying to condense the entire timeline and better tie all these stories together for the sake of cohesion.

The second game is, bizarrely, a Final Fantasy 7 battle royale called The First Soldier. The premise is that it takes place 30 years before the main story and sees how Shinra first created its SOLDIER military program. And while its visuals obviously don’t hold a candle to the remake, it looks surprisingly impressive for a mobile game.

In a lengthy interview about these projects with Japanese outlet Famitsu , director Tetsuya Nomura added that, with all this new work, he won’t be returning to direct the next instalment of the remake.

As translated by Audrey on Twitter, Nomura will still be involved as creative director but his co-director, Naoki Hamaguchi, is stepping up to be the sole director of Part 2.

Final Fantasy 7: The First Soldier releases for iOS and Android in 2021, with Final Fantasy 7 Ever Crisis slated for iOS and Android in 2022.
