Mass Effect co-creator leaves BioWare for second time, as Dragon Age producer also quits

A major upheaval has occurred at Mass Effect and Dragon Age maker BioWare, as the studio loses two of its most experienced developers.

Just when it looked like things were getting back on track for BioWare, with confirmation of Mass Effect 4 and a Mass Effect remaster trilogy , everything has been sent back into disarray, with the exit of two of the company’s most senior staff.

BioWare general manager Casey Hudson and Dragon Age executive producer Mark Darrah have both left the studio. Owners EA are now looking for a permanent replacement for Hudson, while Darrah’s role on the new Dragon Age will be filled by BioWare Austin studio director Christian Dailey.

There are no less than three blogs to make the announcement, from Hudson , Darrah , and EA exec Laura Miele but none of them really explain what’s going on and it’s obvious that two such important developers leaving at the time is a sign of significant turmoil at BioWare.

Both developers have been at BioWare for over 20 years, with Hudson already having left once in 2014, before returning in 2017 to become general manager and, it was assumed, to oversee a new Mass Effect after the disastrous Andromeda.

Any hope that he was also working on a new Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic game have also now been dashed, although it may be that he was able to initiate the project before he left.

Darrah took over control of Anthem in its final months of development and is credited with turning it into an at least somewhat enjoyable game, before returning to work on the new Dragon Age sequel.

‘For me, it’s been the realisation that I still have tremendous energy to create, but also that I need to try something different. I’m not sure exactly what that is yet, but I know that I want to start by rediscovering my creative passion through more personal work’, said Hudson.

Ever since the back-to-back failure of Mass Effect: Andromeda and Anthem, fans have been worried about the long-term future of BioWare and this news will not ease their concerns.

It’s already speculated that one or both creators could be planning to move to newly formed indie studio Yellow Brick Games , founded by Dragon Age veteran Mike Laidlaw and a number of ex-Ubisoft developers – although there’s been no confirmation of that yet.
