Demon’s Souls does not have an easy mode or difficulty options confirms director

The remake of FromSoftware’s first Souls game will not include any options to make it easier, as five minutes of new gameplay are released.

PlayStation 5 launch title Demon’s Souls will not have an easy mode, as developer Bluepoint Games reveal more secrets about the much-anticipated remake.

‘There are no difficulty options in Demon’s Souls, and there shouldn’t be’, said creative director Gavin Moore in an interview with Game Informer .

‘I think that the challenge is fair’, says Moore. ‘I actually don’t believe it is as hard as people imagined it was. I think the difficulty levels of subsequent games in the genre have got harder.’

The Souls games owe much of their popularity to their infamously high difficulty but their lack of accessibility options have become controversial in recent years, especially after Sony games such as The Last Of Us Part 2 have been praised for the range and variety of their customisation options.

Demon’s Souls is set to be an exception to the rule though, with Moore apparently unapologetic about the game’s difficulty and how that will make it all but unplayable to less skilled players or those who cannot use a standard controller.

The Game Informer interview and preview was released alongside five minutes of new gameplay footage, which again suggests that the game will be the most technically advanced of the PlayStation 5 launch titles.

The preview, and others by IGN , Gamespot , and Polygon , also clarified a number of details about the remake, confirming that it will retain the World Tendency system, which affects enemy difficult and loot quality, but there will be a visual indication of its status, unlike in the original game.

At the same time, the healing system will be balanced by giving a weight value to healing grasses, so you can’t carry too many without being penalised.

Rolling will work in more than just four directions and the animations have been improved, although they still last for the same length of time – helping the combat to still feel the same.

There’s also a newer, more cinematic camera, but if you don’t like it you can switch back to the old one.

Considering Bluepoint’s excellent work on the Shadow Of The Colossus remake they always seemed like a safe pair of hands for Demon’s Souls, although the most anticipated part of the remake is simply that the frame rate runs at a more reliable speed.

You have to choose though, between 60fps and a dynamic 4K resolution or native 4K and 30fps, with Moore suggesting that the 60fps mode will make it easier for people by allowing for more reaction time.
