Apex Legends ban spirals out of control, results in death threats

Apex Legends ban spirals out of control, results in death threats

After a streamer got a seemingly innocent Apex Legends player banned, Respawn has been accused of favouritism and mishandling bans.

When streamer LuluLuvely found herself effortlessly taken out, alongside other content creators, during a game of Apex Legends , she believed her opponent to be a hacker.

After sending a clip of the match to Respawn, the developer clearly agreed and banned the offending player.

However, Respawn decided to also ban another player who was near the hacker at the time, a player who claimed to be innocent.

Under a Reddit post titled ‘Killing streamers got me banned,’ the player known as KongoBoom insisted that they weren’t guilty of cheating or hacking of any kind.

Although LuluLuvely later apologised in a now deleted tweet, and said she had done what she can to try and get the player’s ban lifted, both Respawn and she were hit with criticisms from other players.

Accusations of Respawn not handling bans correctly, and showing favouritism towards certain streamers, started to pop up and both Respawn’s Conor Ford (the one who banned the players in the first place) and LuluLuvely received death threats.

Respawn later confirmed over Twitter that, after investigating the situation, it would not lift the player’s ban.

According to its findings, the player was not only in a party with the hacker, meaning that they weren’t there by coincidence, but they appeared to have multiple banned accounts and a history of evading bans.

At the time of writing, the Reddit thread has been locked and KongoBoom’s original post has been deleted.

They did leave one last statement where, although they didn’t admit to Respawn’s findings, they said they had decided to not pursue the matter any further due to the death threats they had also received.

‘I did not expect that it would get this far, that people would threaten to kill for the sake of a game. This is just a game and we get upset sometimes, but it’s still a game I don’t want my account to get unbanned anymore if this will cause murder.’

KongoBoom also calls out the people who threatened LuluLuvely, ‘For those who were sending death threats to LULU! You sick people need some counselling. I’m sorry LULU. You don’t deserve that. I stand by you.’

As for LuluLuvely, she reiterated that the only player she reported was the original hacker, meaning that she was never at fault for KongoBoom’s ban in the first place.

Also since some people STILL DON’T UNDERSTAND I never even accused the bloodhound of cheating, I sent in a clip of the GIBRALTOR. So you guys saying I wrongfully accused someone need to hop of reddit and learn to gather information. — NRG Lulu (@LuluLuvely) October 22, 2020

The original offending clip is no longer available, but it’s clear that all the parties involved consider the matter resolved.

Apex Legends is available on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
