Xbox Series X dashboard only runs at 1080p compared to 4K PS5

Does the resolution matter? (pic: Microsoft)

Now that the PS5 UI has been revealed the comparisons with the Xbox Series X have begun and they show a very different approach.

As if there wasn’t enough things to argue about when it comes to the next gen consoles there’s now a clear divide between how the Xbox Series X and PS5 display their dashboard, and no agreement on which is best.

A tweet by Digital Foundry’s John Linneman confirms that the Xbox Series X dashboard only runs at 1080p, despite yesterday Sony revealing that the PlayStation UI runs at native 4K.

Even the PS4 Pro has a 4K dashboard and yet the Xbox Series X has stuck with the same lower resolution display as the Xbox One X, which Linneman describes as ‘not acceptable’.

Well, the big problem for me, more than anything, with the Xbox dash is the low resolution. I was disappointed with Xbox One X only offering 1080p UI rendering when PS4 Pro did native 4K but for 1080p UI to continue on Series X…that’s really not acceptable to me. — John Linneman (@dark1x) October 15, 2020

It was already known that the Xbox dashboard updates this month would be the same across all models of console, so in that sense the lack of a 4K resolution is not much of a surprise.

But rather than just maintaining continuity it seems that Microsoft may have made the choice in order to improve performance for Xbox games.

According to Digital Foundry’s review of the Xbox One X , Microsoft was intending to make the current gen dashboard 4K by setting aside 1GB of RAM for it. But game developers apparently told them that would be better used for games, so they didn’t.

Presumably, Microsoft has simply continued to follow that logic for the Xbox Series X, even if it opens up a new front between Xbox and PlayStation advocates, who can now argue about which dashboard resolution is best.
