Dreamcast Mini could be Sega’s next mini console says Mega Drive Mini creator

Sega is thinking of bringing back the Dreamcast

Sega are planning to make a new mini console and it looks like the number one choice is a recreation of the Dreamcast and its games.

Between the Game Gear Micro and the Astro City mini arcade , Sega has been on a real retro hardware bender recently, even if the only one to officially be released in the West is the Mega Drive Mini .

The creator of Sega’s mini consoles is Yosuke Okunari, who according to a new interview in Famitsu magazine wants to make a Dreamcast Mini next. That or a version of the SG-1000, Sega’s first ever console from 1983.

Exactly how serious Okunari is being about the Dreamcast is unclear, as while it’s theoretically easy to emulate there are major licensing issues surrounding the music in titles such as Crazy Taxi and Jet Set Radio.

‘We’re considering concepts similar to the Mega Drive Mini. If I had to name some ideas, something like an SG-1000 Mini or a Dreamcast Mini’, said Okunari, as translated by Nintendo Life .

Ignoring the music licensing problems there shouldn’t be any other major difficulties with creating a mini console, since Sega itself created some of the best known titles, including Sonic Adventure, Shenmue, Skies Of Arcadia, Rez, The House Of The Dead, Virtua Fighter, Samba De Amigo, Space Channel 5, and Seaman.

Most of the best third party games are Japanese so there’s a good chance Sega can talk the likes of Bandai Namco and Capcom into including games such as Soulcalibur, Power Stone, and Resident Evil – Code: Veronica (although Marvel Vs. Capcom is probably a no-no).

Okunari doesn’t confirm a Dreamcast Mini is definitely happening but it does sound as if it is the most likely of the projects he mentions, since he talks about wanting to appeal to the West and creating something with global reach.

‘As we have the world [market] in consideration, when we develop our next [Mini] project, the scope will be much greater’, he says.

The SG-1000 was barely released outside of Japan and is almost forgotten today, so from that perspective a Dreamcast Mini seems much more likely – even if it would also be much more work.

Even if it does get the go-ahead though it doesn’t sound like it’ll be out any time soon, with Okunari warning that the size of the project will mean nothing before next year at the earliest.
