Microsoft has tried to buy back Bungie multiple times claim insiders

Xbox Game Pass may be getting a major new addition, as rumours suggest Microsoft is spending big on something that isn’t an acquisition.

Rather than exclusive games, or even the console itself, it’s now clear that the primary appeal of the Xbox is Game Pass, especially as Sony can’t boast anything close to the same value for money.

Keeping Game Pass well stocked with prominent games is a difficult and expensive business though, and VentureBeat writer Jeff Grubb has suggested that Microsoft is currently, ‘spending a lot of money on something that isn’t an acquisition’.

He didn’t know what exactly though and asked the other participants in the podcast if they had any ideas, with former Game Informer editor Imran Khan suggesting Destiny 2 – at which point both began to recant stories of how Microsoft has recently attempted to acquire developer Bungie.

Of course, Microsoft did used to own Bungie, when they were responsible for the first several Halo games, but allowed them to become independent again when the studio became increasingly unhappy at being a first party developer.

After also breaking ties with original Destiny publisher Activision, Bungie has supposedly been approached by Microsoft multiple times, with the sticking point simply being that they are too expensive.

Whether Microsoft wanted to put them back to working on Halo is unclear but for the moment at least it looks like the deal isn’t happening.

What else Microsoft might be spending money on at the moment is a mystery though, with Khan suggesting he’d heard similar rumours and that it wasn’t so much the addition of a big name game to Game Pass but all of its expansions.

There are few games that would fit this description on Game Pass, except… Destiny 2 when it arrives on 10 November.

An alternative theory from fans is that Cyberpunk 2077 – which also has a number of expansions planned – might be the game in question.

There’s no evidence for this but it has been suggested as a Game Pass candidate several times by fans, simply because it’s a major release with no ties to Sony. Being on Game Pass wouldn’t stop it from being on PlayStation, it would just make it free for Xbox subscribers.
