120fps and ray-tracing coming to Call Of Duty: Black Ops Cold War for PS5 and Xbox Series X/S

Call Of Duty: Black Ops Cold War – 120fps is the new 60fps (pic: Activision)

This year’s Call Of Duty will be the first in the series to run at 120fps on consoles, as Activision also confirm next gen ray-tracing.

Last night’s Call Of Duty: Black Ops Cold War multiplayer reveal had less surprises than the one for the story campaign but perhaps the most important details have emerged afterwards, regarding the next gen versions of the game.

According to developer Treyarch all the next gen versions, for Xbox Series X/S and PlayStation 5 , will support 120fps instead of the normal 60fps.

Ray-tracing will also supported by the next gen editions, which should make Cold War one of the most technically advanced next gen games this year.

The console versions will also run at 4K with high dynamic range on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X, but not Xbox Series S – as the reason that console is so cheap is that it can’t do 4K.

There’ll also be 120Hz support and ‘next gen 3D audio’, something that Sony has been especially keen to emphasise with the PlayStation 5.

Considering the marketing deal Sony has with Call Of Duty that’s no doubt why Treyarch are highlighting the new ‘threat priority system’ that, ‘dynamically assigns priorities to various sounds during a firefight’.

At the same time there’s full support for the DualSense’s haptic feedback, as well as a new ballistics system that has, ‘a new method of integrating bullet crack’ – which sounds faintly scurrilous.

There’s still some dispute as to whether anything above 60fps offers a perceptible difference, especially if you don’t have a 60Hz monitor or TV, but since 120 is a bigger number than 60 some developers are starting to push it anyway.

Whatever you think of the feature, options are always good, which only leaves the important question of when the next gen games will be released.

The PC and current gen versions are out on 13 November, but although that’s the same week as the Xbox Series X/S there’s so far been no sign that Activision will release Cold War as a launch game, as has happened with the likes of Assassin’s Creed Valhalla and Yakuza: Like A Dragon .

It may well turn out that Sony force them to release the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S versions at the same time, presumably sometime later in November.
