Xbox Series S release date confirmed as Call Of Duty and Destiny 2 lead launch line-up

Microsoft has revealed exactly when their first next gen console will be out and that makes it easy to predict what its launch games will be.

It’s not often a new console gets announced without the manufacturer being involved but that’s exactly what happened with the Xbox Series S, which had its details leaked all over the Internet before Microsoft had a chance to reveal it themselves.

Since the leaks were obviously real, Microsoft didn’t try to deny them and today they’ve officially released the video describing the smaller, cheaper, but less powerful console.

Perhaps most importantly they’ve now confirmed the release date as 10 November and the UK price as £249.99 . They haven’t said anything about the Xbox Series X yet, but rumour yesterday suggested it would be out on the same day.

When Microsoft intended to formally announce any of this, with a proper online showcase, is unclear, as while they’ve implied they’ll do so ‘soon’ there’s no indication of whether that means this week or just this month.

Before that happens though a quick study of the release schedules shows that the only major game currently scheduled to release the same day as the Xbox Series S (and potentially Series X) is Destiny 2 expansion Beyond Light.

Whether Bungie knew the Xbox Series S release date when they chose that day is unclear but the only other games out at the same time are music game Fuser, from the makers of Rock Band, and the remake of PlayStation 2 title XIII.

Obviously, Halo Infinite was supposed to be out the same day but clearly that’s not going to happen now. Although there may be some slim chance that some kind of demo or playable teaser will be released at launch.

It’s also possible that Microsoft may convince publishers to move around some of their release dates by a few days, as Call Of Duty: Black Ops Cold War and Yakuza: Like A Dragon are both out the same week, but on the Friday instead of the 10th, which is a Tuesday.

Since they will have been released just a few weeks earlier it’s also extremely likely that Dirt 5 and and Watch Dogs Legion will be launch games, as they’re already known to have next gen versions.

Other possibilities include FIFA 21, NBA 2K21, PES, Madden NFL 21, WRC 9, Ride 4, and Marvel’s Avengers – and that’s just games that have confirmed they have a next gen version on the way.

Then the week after you have – through the genius of poor publisher scheduling – both Assassin’s Creed Valhalla and Cyberpunk 2077.

Valhalla will definitely have a separate next gen Xbox version but while Cyberpunk 2077 will be upgraded on the new hardware there won’t be a separate version until next year.

Many other games will be optimised for Xbox Series S and X but in terms of new games this seems to be all you can hope for, unless Microsoft has some very well-kept secret it’s still hiding.
