Spider-Man: Miles Morales releases new PS5 screenshot with ray-tracing puddle

Insomniac has released new information on Spider-Man: Miles Morales for PS5, insisting that it is a spin-off with a ‘complete story’.

If Halo Infinite hadn’t been delayed this year’s next gen battle would have been between Master Chief and Spider-Man, but now Miles Morales has been left (web-)swinging without any opposition.

Despite being the only confirmed first party exclusive out on PlayStation 5 this year (apart from Astro’s Playroom) very little is known about the game, with it taking some time for Sony to admit that it’s not a full-length title but a spin-off roughly the length of Uncharted: The Lost Legacy .

So it’s no surprise to find that the despite a full feature in Entertainment Weekly the only new information is a single screenshot that on the face of it doesn’t reveal anything significant.

However, the fact that there’s a puddle with what seems to be a ray-traced image of Miles Morales reflected in it seems to be a knowing reference to the furore over the original game – which faced accusations of its graphics being downgraded when its puddles didn’t look as good as early footage suggested (yes, that was a real thing that people got upset about).

Developer Insomniac has certainly promised ray-tracing in the game, as well as 3D audio, and near-instant loading. Although the latter two are hard to illustrate in a screenshot.

The article has no mention of the rumour that the game will include a next gen remaster of the original 2018 Spider-Man , which if it’s true is leaving things very late.

‘This is a full arc for Miles Morales that started in Spider-Man’, says creative director Brian Horton, ‘We really are completing this hero’s coming of age in our game. It is a complete story.’

That almost seems to imply that Miles won’t be in the sequel, or at least that he’ll take on only a supporting role again. Although since he has very different powers, including invisibility and ‘bioshock’, it may be that Insomniac are building up to a two-player game.
