Doom Eternal and Elder Scrolls Online coming to PS5 and Xbox Series X as free updates

Next gen games for free (pic: Bethesda)

Bethesda is planning next gen versions of two of their biggest games but they’ll be available for free if you already own them.

Given that backwards compatibility is such a hot topic nowadays, unlike previous generations, it’s not really been clear how companies are going to handle next gen versions of recently released games.

In previous years they would’ve just released the next gen versions at full price, with a few changes, and expected people to double-dip, but thankfully that’s not happening this time round.

Many companies have announced updates or new versions of existing games and many of them have said that if you already own the current gen version you can get the next gen update for free – and that’s just what’s happening with Bethesda’s Doom Eternal and The Elder Scrolls Online.

Bethesda is also working to make sure both games support backwards compatibility on Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5, which is nice.

They haven’t said what will actually change about the next gen updates but have instead advised fans to wait for more information. They’ve also hinted that other older games will get a similar upgrade, although again without any clue as to which ones.

Which makes you wonder if they’d consider making a next gen version of Skyrim, which could emulate Grand Theft Auto 5 by being released on three consecutive generations of consoles.

These aren’t the first next gen games that Bethesda has announced, with cross-gen game Deathloop due out this year and Ghostwire: Tokyo, Starfield, and The Elder Scrolls 6 all set to appear on the new consoles (although at the rate it’s going Elder Scrolls 6 might end up on the PlayStation 6).

Bethesda is not having an E3 equivalent event this year but QuakeCon At Home is due to run between 7 and 9 of August on Twitch, where there might be a few more hints about their future plans.
