Fall Guys warns of continued server problems as game becomes instant hit

Thanks to being free on PS Plus, multiplayer game Fall Guys has been so successful on its first day that the servers can’t cope.

From almost out of nowhere Fall Guys has become one of the biggest games of the summer, with developer Mediatonic announcing that it’s hit 120,000 concurrent players.

Success has come at a price though, as they’ve had to turn off matchmaking and account creation to try and cope, with warnings of more outages to come.

In fact, things are only likely to get worse tonight, as everyone finishes work, so if you can’t get in at the moment then you may have to try again later.

Are the Fall Guys servers down?

We tried to secretly bring the servers back online but 100,000 of you all came flooding back in lol. To cope with this, we’re temporarily disabling account creation for PS4! We’ll let you know as soon as it’s back! Thanks for your patience! — Fall Guys 👑 (@FallGuysGame) August 4, 2020

A major reason for the game’s success is that it’s currently free via PlayStation Plus, although it will only be that way for August. Which is very reminiscent of how Rocket League became such a massive hit.

It may be a little early to predict a hit on that scale, although the game’s also hit over 59,000 concurrent players on Steam , where it costs £15.99 – the same as if you don’t have PS Plus.

Fall Guys is essentially a battle royale game played with 60 other people, except instead of shooting them you’re competing in wacky, Wipeout (the game show, not the futuristic racer) style obstacle courses.

It’s the sort of fun, silly family-friendly game that everyone but Nintendo has shied away from in recent years, so it’s really no surprise to see it catching on so quickly.

If it can be sustained then it could turn developer Mediatonic – who have studios in London, Brighton, and Madrid – into a major player.

Which is no small feat as all they’ve previously been known for is Murder By Numbers and that Gears Of War Funko Pop game that everyone collectively erased from their memory the second it was announced.
