Next gen video game price increase ‘is justified’ says Take-Two

The publisher of NBA 2K, and owner of Rockstar, is unapologetic about the upcoming price hike that will see next gen games cost £65.

It now seems certain that the very biggest name games will cost more on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X than they do on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, but that won’t be the case for all games.

Take-Two’s NBA 2K21 was the first game to be spotted advertising a price increase , with the game having an RRP of £64.99 on next gen consoles but costing £59.99 on Xbox One and PlayStation 4.

For the first time Take-Two has acknowledged the increase, and pointed to the fact that video games have not seen a price rise in a long time, with CEO Strauss Zelnick saying, ‘We think with the value we offer consumers… and the kind of experience you can really only have on these next generation consoles, that the price is justified.’

In the current gen, £59.99 is only reserved for the biggest name titles, usually primarily multiplayer games such as FIFA and Call Of Duty. Otherwise it’s usually £54.99 for games such as The Last Of Us Part 2 or £49.99 or less for other titles.

That wide range of prices is likely to continue in the next gen, with Ubisoft already saying that they will not increase the price of their next gen games – at least for this year.

Asked by whether that would cause difficulties for Take-Two, Zelnick answered, ‘We don’t speak for the industry and the industry naturally does not coordinate on these matters, to say the very least.’

‘The pricing has to reflect the quality of the experience, and we aim to provide the best experiences in the business’, he added. ‘And from our point of view, it’s an extremely modest price change given that prices haven’t changed for a very long time.’

Zelnick later admitted, in the company’s earnings call, that the price rise would not be applied to all Take-Two’s next gen games.

But it remains the fact that other publishers are likely to follow Take-Two’s lead and that in some cases PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X games will be £5 more than their current gen equivalents.
