Games Inbox: The Elder Scrolls 6 release date, Gran Turismo 7 vs. Forza Horizon, and Pikmin 3 Deluxe

Elder Scrolls 6 – a boat has been missed (pic: Bethesda)

The Monday Inbox doesn’t believe rumours about a Legacy Of Kain remake, as one reader congratulates Pac-Man on his 40th anniversary.

Not next in line I found the Grand Theft Auto 6 Reader’s Feature at the weekend interesting and mostly logical in its deductions but the line that got me was when they said that we’d go a whole generation without a new GTA. This is true but we’ll also go a whole generation without a new Elder Scrolls, even though we had two last gen!

I find it completely bizarre that Bethesda could let things go that long without a follow-up to Skyrim, especially as they’ve given no indication there’s been a delay or anything. The only think they’ve made instead is Fallout 4, which was okay but pretty similar to the last game. So what’s going on?

My assumption is that it’s to do with the graphics, which they’ve always been behind on, and they’re having trouble keeping up with the new standards (especially, as we all know the faces). But I thought Bethesda were a pretty big company, can they not afford to do better? For a whole generation wasn’t there a small time working on a new game engine or something? Or couldn’t they, you know, just use Unreal Engine?

And it’s not even that it’s they’re next game. Starfield is first and we know zero about that, so even at the most optimistic that’ll be announced this year and out in… a year or two? Then more Elder Scrolls a year or two after that? Crazy how they’ve left it this long and it’s only going to cost them because I find my Skyrim itch is being scratched by plenty of other games nowadays and I think the series is losing its reputation.

Personally I’d scrap Starfield and move the Elder Scrolls release date up, we can’t wait this long. Uncle

Untrusted partners So this whole Gran Turismo 7 thing seems like a bit of a disaster, eh? Seems pretty obvious that Sony must’ve sent some early info and a logo round to ‘trusted’ partners and some didn’t understand the concept of keeping a secret. How an official PlayStation division can make the mistake I don’t know. Especially as that question doesn’t even make sense. Not only is Just Dance 2020 a terrible game to play on the sofa but what kind of co-op is Gran Turismo 7 supposed to have? Or is that more leaked info!

I am curious to see how the game will turn out though as Forza Horizon has kind of took over as everyone’s favourite serious-ish racer, except it’s not that serious and I’m think that Gran Turismo 7 is going to end up looking a bit boring and fuddy-duddy by comparison. Also, as I understand it’s never been that big in the US.

Sony must be aware of this but the developer is famously stubborn about changing things/hurrying up so it’s going to be interesting to see how the game ends up being pitched. If the graphics are good then it could be a good launch game for the PlayStation 5, but I hope it’s not the only one because it clearly doesn’t have universal appeal. Klimbe

Seeing is not believing Saying things like ‘100 times the processing power’ for PlayStation 5 sounds like such an obvious exaggeration I don’t know who can believe it. This is exactly the same sort of talk we see every generation and then it turns out the launch games are almost indistinguishable, if not worse, than the best games from the current gen.

I mean, the Unreal Engine 5 demo looked good, but it didn’t look THAT good! After all, someone was able to copy a section in Dreams just a couple of hours later.

I know some people get into the hype and everything, and I’m sure some of these tech specs make sense to someone but even then they’re all being manipulated – the good parts exaggerated and the bad parts kept quiet.

Even showing us the games doesn’t mean anything as that can easily be faked too, like the Assassin’s Creed Valhalla ‘gameplay’ reveal. When I’ve got the games in my hands is when I believe anything and that seems a long way off still. Craster

Unbelievable rumour So, there are some rumours going around currently, the source being a 4chan post, that Bluepoint will be revealing a remake of the Legacy Of Kain games during the Summer Games Fest, and I don’t know how to feel.

The post is on 4chan (red flag number one), has a few glaring spelling errors (red flag number two), and from the way it’s written is almost implying that Legacy Of Kain is a single game rather than five (red flag number three). Despite this… it’s a bit of a niche series to use to troll people, isn’t it?

I’m trying to take it with a bucket of salt, but I still feel vague murmurings of the bitterest illusion: hope.

With the additional costumes for Lego Super Mario, I still wonder what other toy collaborations other readers might want. As a straight man in my 30s I have only a slight sense of shame when I say I would probably buy Bayonetta Barbie. Joseph Dowland

GC: Yeah, that doesn’t sound very believable as a source. Although we could kind of imagine a remake of Soul Reaver being a possibility. It’s certainly no less niche than best guess Demon’s Souls. And if it helps, we also would buy a Bayonetta Barbie. In fact we’re now curious to know exactly how beehives work. Is it mostly braiding or hairspray or both?

Never the last So if The Last Of Us Part 2 is a massive hit despite everyone saying that the story is bad and they’ve cancelled their pre-orders is that the point at which we completely give up listening to complainers on the Internet?

I know it won’t be, but it seems every other day ‘fans’ get their selves in a knot about something and then the game comes out and it turned out two people cared, and they ended up buying it anyway. I know I’m still getting it. St1nger

Bottom of the barrel Not too surprised that The Wonderful 101: Remastered hasn’t revealed that well. I never particularly liked it on Wii U and was very surprised to see it get such an enthusiastic response on Kickstarter, although now I wonder how much of that can be put down to just general love for Platinum.

The problem is we’re now getting to the dregs of the Wii U’s line-up and I think there’s a point at which Nintendo has got to say enough is enough. Which they’re probably not going to do because they haven’t got anything else out at the moment.

But I would advise against Pikmin 3 as well. It was a really disappointing sequel and while I suppose it’s fine I you haven’t played any of the games before I think they’d be much better of making a new game/reboot. Even by the second one it seemed like they were just treading water and if the fourth one’s big gimmick is that there’s now four player characters I think we’ll know they’ve run out of ideas.

This is a peculiar year for everyone but at the moment Nintendo need to prove that their empty schedules are just because of coronavirus and not, as I suspect, because they’ve dropped the ball with their teams as well. If all we’ve got for Switch this year is remasters I’m not going to be impressed. Knightsong

Constant improvement I’m excited for the next gen but I’m one gen behind the current gen. The GC review of Mafia 2, when you guys said, it seemed it was showing it’s 10 years old. Come on, are games really that better now than 10 years ago?

I’m still playing Split/Second. Shout out to Gill Came for corrupting my nervous disposition with Dark Souls. D Dubya

GC: We mean… yes? The good ones are anyway. And it’s not like there is a current gen equivalent to Split/Second to compare to, more’s the pity.

Necessary hardship I’m in a similar situation to Bigmac Kenna in terms of not being that interested in the next gen at the moment, but for different reasons.

Buying new consoles to me is just something that I have to do every few years if I want to continue my favourite hobby, something to be gotten out of the way to get to what I actually want to do: play games. Maybe it’s because I have a huge backlog, so I’m not desperate for anything new to play, or because I’ve seen enough console launches now to know that launch games are rarely that great. I know I’ll get one of the new consoles a few years after they come out, and by that time any hardware problems will have been sorted out and there will be enough games for me to be able to decide which I’ll actually want to get.

All the arguing about tech specs just leaves me cold, to be honest. Any differences between the two are likely to be minor, and the most powerful console rarely wins its generation anyway, which means multiformat games are limited to a degree by the capabilities of the most popular console. 60fps is worth aiming for because it genuinely makes games feel different, but resolution and graphics are just window dressing. A game with an interesting, distinct art style is going to have a longer-lasting impact than something aiming for photorealism anyway.

Based on the recent letters I’m clearly in the minority with these opinions, and it’s fun watching everyone getting excited and passionate about a new console launch, but for me the most interesting time comes two to three years later, once developers have really started to get to grips with how to work on the new hardware. Inbox also-rans Crazy to think that something like Pac-Man is older than I am. It was one of the first big arcade games I guess but it makes you realise that video games aren’t the young industry you often think. Balky

Is it just me or does 30 to 50 hours to beat Ghost Of Tsushima sound kind of on the short side? It’s not bad, but it’s not something I’d brag about either. Laskel2

This week’s Hot Topic The question for this weekend’s Inbox was suggested by reader Podge, who asks what classic game or franchise have you never played?

With so many formats over the years nobody gets to play every well-received video game that’s released but what’s the most famous one that you’ve somehow avoided? Was it because you didn’t have the right console or PC, because it didn’t appeal at the time, or simply because you didn’t have the money?

Was there any notable game you went for a long time without playing and recently got a chance to try out? What did you think of it in the end and do you have plans to catch up on the other titles you’ve missed?
