Amazon delaying video game pre-order deliveries due to coronavirus

Video games are not a priority right now (pic: Reuters)

There will be no more video game deliveries from Amazon until April, although Animal Crossing and Doom Eternal should be unaffected.

If you’ve pre-ordered a video game from Amazon – or anything else that isn’t medical supplies or ‘high demand’ items for the coronavirus outbreak – you may not get them until next month.

For the next three weeks Amazon has suspended all shipments to its warehouses that are not something that is essential to dealing with the coronavirus and self-isolation.

Amongst a great many other things, that means video games. Although Amazon is shipping out items that are already in its warehouse, which seems to include this week’s Animal Crossing: New Horizons and Doom Eternal.

Where the cut-off point exists is unclear, but several users on forum ResetEra and elsewhere have reported a delay for Final Fantasy 7 Remake, which is due out on 10 April.

Persona 5 Royal on 31 March and Resident Evil 3 on 3 April may also be affected, depending on whether copies have been shipped to Amazon yet.

None of this affects digital, of course, or games pre-ordered from other companies, and Amazon should be able to fulfil the orders from 5 April – although depending on how things go there’s no guarantee the suspension won’t be extended or reinstated at a later date.

Unlike the movie and film industry, so far the coronavirus has had relatively little affect on gaming, beyond the cancelling of public events , with many developers switching to working from home and no major delays reported so far – although Microsoft is considering one for Minecraft Dungeons in April.

There have been rumours that the next gen Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 may be delayed , at the end of the year, but nothing from either Microsoft or Sony suggests that yet, especially as the latter is planning a major livestream reveal later today .
