When is the Minecraft Nether Update released?

A new Minecraft update is coming (Picture: Microsoft)

It’s an exciting time for Minecraft fans with the news that the game’s getting a big new update – known as the Nether Update.

The update was announced by developer Mojang earlier this month, revealing that a number of changes and additions will be coming to the game, mostly concerning the Nether itself.

So just when is the update released – and what can players expect?

Here’s what you need to know…

When is the Minecraft Nether Update released?

At the moment there’s no confirmed release date for the Minecraft Nether Update.

However Mojang have said that it’s going to be in the first half of 2020.

The most recent change to the game, the Buzzy Bees update, was released on 11 December 2019.

Players can already get a taste of what to expect with the Minecraft 1.16 snapshot – which is available to launch via the Minecraft Launcher.

What can you expect from the Minecraft Nether Update?

The update will feature several new areas to the Nether, including the spooky Soulsand Valley region, Warped Forests – which features a host of spores and fungi, and Crimson Forests, which are covered in Crimson Spores and Weeping Vines.

Look out also for new enemies, which will include gold-loving Piglins, and the floppy-eared Hoglins, both of which are set to feature in the Nether.

However the most exciting addition would appear to be a new type of ore called Netherite, which is worth getting your hands on even though it’s hard to find.

It will give extra power to any weapons covered in it, while Netherite armour provides better knock-back resistance and is more hard-wearing – plus it can’t be destroyed by lava.

Netherite can only be found by mining Ancient Debris in the lower depths of the Nether which can then be refined into Netherite Scrap in a furnace.

You can then combine four scraps with four Gold Ingots – which will make one Netherite Ingot.

This particular part of the update is only currently available on the Java versions of the game, and there’s no confirmation yet of when it will appear on other versions – plus of course it’s only in snapshot form.
