Project xCloud preview starts on iOS today, as Microsoft partners with Samsung

Microsoft’s video game streaming service is now available on iPhone and iPad, if you’re one of 1,000 lucky testers.
Microsoft has always been very careful to say that video game streaming will not take over from consoles overnight, but their progress with Project xCloud continues apace and today takes an important step forward.
The current Project xCloud preview has been expanded to include iOS devices, although currently there’s only space for 10,000 testers and they have to be from the UK, US, or Canada.
It’ll also only involve one game (Halo: The Master Chief Collection) and won’t support Xbox console streaming, just Halo via xCloud.

If you’re already a Project xCloud preview member then you can update your details to include iOS or, if you’ve not signed up before, you can start the process here .
In terms of hardware you need an iOS device running 13.0 or higher and Bluetooth version 4.0, as well as a Bluetooth-compatible Xbox One wireless controller. And a decent broadband connection, of course, that supports at least 10Mbps.

The news comes just a day after Microsoft announced a partnership with Samsung for game streaming.
What this will mean in practical terms is unclear, but presumably it will involve Samsung helping to promote the service and perhaps even making specific phones and tablets for it.
‘Both Samsung and Xbox share a vision for bringing great gaming experiences to mobile players around the world’, said Samsung’s David S. Park.
‘With our 5G-enabled portfolios and Microsoft’s rich history in gaming, we are working closely together to create a premium cloud-based game streaming experience. You’ll hear more about it later this year.’
