When is the PS5 going to be revealed? And what about Xbox Series X?

The PlayStation 5 is one of the worst kept secrets ever, so when is Sony actually going to show the thing?
This year will mark another turning point in gaming consoles. While the Nintendo Switch is still relatively fresh, the releases of Microsoft’s Xbox Series X and Sony’s PlayStation 5 will officially begin the ninth generation of hardware.
Both of these consoles are slated for a holiday release (i.e. between October and December) but Microsoft already has a bit of a head-start. While there is still quite a lot about it that we don’t know, we at least know what the thing looks like and Microsoft has boasted that backwards compatibility will be a launch feature and that all of its games will release on PC as well. And although it has become a bit of a source of mockery for it’s look, it at least got people talking about it .
Of course, Microsoft still have some secrets up its sleeve. Xbox Series X implies that this will only be the first in a line of new hardware. It was reported only last month that two consoles, codenamed Lockhart and Anaconda , were being worked on, with the latter (presumed to be what became the Xbox Series X) offering higher specs. Microsoft intends to be at E3 this year, so it’s quite likely that more details will be talked about there. Although a reveal event sometime before that, perhaps even around the same time as Sony, is also likely.
The PlayStation 5, however, continues to be something of an enigma. Sony have only ever mentioned it in the vaguest of terms, and a lot of information that’s been making the rounds could be false. However, we do have some knowledge about its specs, and game producer Mark Cerny has stated that it will be backwards compatible with PlayStation 4 games ; no doubt as a response to Microsoft’s championing of the feature.
There is even a rumour that the PlayStation 5 will be able to play games from the PlayStation 3, PlayStation 2, and even the original PlayStation , but this seems too good to be true.

We may have an idea of what it looks like based on images of the devkit , but they often look nothing like the final retail designs, all of which brings us to the big question: when is the PlayStation 5 going to be revealed?
Sony have already confirmed that it is once again skipping E3 and will be hosting its own event for the PlayStation 5’s unveiling but, even then, details are scarce. Will it be restricted to only members of the press? Could it be a public event? Maybe people will be able to actually play on the thing and get an early feel for it? That last one is, admittedly, very unlikely.
At this stage, our only point of reference is the reveal of the PlayStation 4 from 2013. Sony held a PlayStation Meeting in February to officially announce the console, and recent rumours claim that Sony is planning another PlayStation Meeting this February too. If that’s the case, then they have to properly discuss the PlayStation 5; it’s the only thing people are talking about in regards to the company and a lack of any concrete info would not go down well.
Hopefully, though, it won’t be a 1:1 recreation of the PlayStation 4 unveiling, as the console wasn’t actually shown during that February event. We didn’t get to see what it looked like until that year’s E3 in June (surprise: it was a big black box). Continuing to hide the console’s appearance any longer after Microsoft has already pulled back the curtain on its console would only upset people all over again.

At the very least, it could serve as a good opportunity to show off some of the console’s exclusives to help revitalise interest. Even if no new titles are announced, some in-game footage of, say, Godfall could go down well. It may be asking for too much, but treating the reveal like a mini-E3 presentation would be welcome, and is actually fairly likely.
Sony may not have anything officially confirmed and there is still plenty of time until the console is due out, but if it’s going to be a no-show at E3, something tangible needs to be said about the PlayStation 5 before summer time, perhaps even earlier.
