Nintendo Switch sold 0.8 million consoles in US over Black Friday in best week ever

It’s been a good month for Nintendo (pic: Nintendo)
It’s been a good few days for Nintendo Switch sales records, as lifetime sales in Japan beat the PlayStation 3 and close in on the Wii.
Although there were a few half decent console bundles, Black Friday generally didn’t have much in the way of Nintendo bargains in the UK – in fact one of the best ones was only announced after Black Friday had finished.
It doesn’t seem to have been that much different in America and yet according to Nintendo the Switch sold 830,000 consoles over the Thanksgiving weekend (i.e. Black Friday).
That’s its best week of sales ever, with the Switch’s lifetime total now at 17.5 million in the U.S. and around 42 million worldwide.

The question now is whether the Switch can pass the lifetime total of the Xbox One, despite Microsoft’s three-year head start, before the end of the year.
That’s something it seemed to be on course for before Black Friday, but which has been made more difficult after the Xbox One S All-Digital Edition became one of the most widely discounted consoles over the Black Friday period.

With the next generation Xbox out next year the Switch will certainly beat the Xbox One’s sales at some point, but the one console it’s already passed in Japan is the PlayStation 3.
Like most other countries the PlayStation 3 wasn’t quite as successful in Japan as Sony’s other consoles, although since the Xbox is irrelevant in Japan all its competition came solely from Nintendo.
Even so, the PlayStation 3 managed a solid 10,248,867 consoles sold in its lifetime, which has now just been passed by the Switch with 10,432,570 consoles.

The Switch has already beaten the PlayStation 4 in Japan, where its total stands at only 8,506,964, and is now within spitting distance of the Wii’s total of 12,739,119.
It’s still got a long way to go to beat Sony’s most successful consoles though, with the PlayStation 1’s Japanese total standing at 18.85 million and the PlayStation 2 on 21.45 million.
However, the most successful consoles in Japan are all portables, with the 3DS on 25.22 million, the Game Boy on 32.47 million, and the Nintendo DS a seemingly unassailable 32.99 million.
