Command & Conquer: Renegade developers reveal spiritual sequel Earthbreakers

The ex-Westwood Studios developers behind the Command & Conquer remakes have announced their own take on C&C: Renegade.
When EA acquired Westwood Studios in 1998 they were one of the most well-known Western developers in the world and real-time strategy games one of the most successful genres on the PC.
Five years later though and both Westwood and the real-time strategy genre were dead and so far they’ve stayed that way. Although a number of ex-Westwood developers did set-up a new studio called Petroglyph and they’re the ones making new game Earthbreakers.
Although there’s no official connection, Earthbreakers is very clearly a spiritual sequel to 2002’s Command & Conquer: Renegade, which portrayed the usual strategy gameplay from a first person view and allowed you to control all the vehicles.

Renegade has always seemed a great idea, even if the technology of 2002, and Westwood’s inexperience with action games, was never able to do it justice.
Although the Steam page for the game went up last month nobody seems to have noticed until now, but it promises two factions, 12 infantry classes, 11 different structures, six driveable vehicles, and multiple maps.
It’s primarily a multiplayer game, with maps supporting up to 32 players who must cooperate in order to build some of the larger buildings.
The game has only a vague 2020 release date though and there’s weirdly no mention of it on Petroglyph’s website .

Although, to be honest, Petroglyph’s output has been increasingly disappointing in recent years and while their first game Star Wars: Empire At War was good, Grey Goo was only okay, and Conan Unconquered was straight up bad.
We’re hoping for better things from the remakes of Command & Conquer and Command & Conquer: Red Alert but you can’t help but imagine that Petroglyph must’ve pitched Earthbreakers to EA as an official title and they said no.
We’ll leave you to judge whether that seems like a sensible decision, but that trailer is not entirely convincing.
