Games Inbox: Best game of 2020, John Wick Hex love, and Luigi’s Mansion 3 hype

The Last Of Us Part II – will it be the biggest game of 2020?
The Friday Inbox asks whether Blizzard or Bethesda are having the worse year, as one reader struggles to get excited about Half-Life VR rumours.

New year predictions
Next spring is looking absolutely crazy for games but is anyone willing to guess which one is going to be the biggest or even if any of them are going to be flops? As well as a bunch of smaller games you’ve got The Last Of Us Part II, Final Fantasy VII Remake, Watch Dogs: Legion, Doom Eternal, Animal Crossing: New Horizons, Cyberpunk 2077, and Marvel’s Avengers. And that’s all in just the first four and a half months of the year.
That is a little more spaced out than Christmas releases though so you could make an argument that they’ll all be a hit. Except maybe Watch Dogs, which is the same week as Final Fantasy. I’d say the front runners are The Last Of Us and Cyberpunk 2077, with Cyberpunk presumably winning because it’s multiformat.
Between Final Fantasy and The Last Of Us though Sony are going to be killing it in terms of exclusives, which is going to set them up very nicely for the next gen, especially as they still have a few things in reserve after that. All Microsoft seems to have is Ori And The Will Of The Wisps.
As for flops… I don’t think Doom Eternal is going to do anything. I just don’t think there’s much of an audience for it and it only seemed to do well the first time because everyone bought it cheaper. I could see Watch Dogs underperforming, especially given that release date.

Easy life
As convincing as all those Half-Life VR rumours sound I still can’t believe it’s going to happen. Apart from anything what’s the point of a stealth release for a VR game? Even if everyone suddenly decides they want it on the spot (which may well happen) they’ve then got to order and buy a new headset. And even if they decide they’ve got the money that’s going to take days. Not exactly an impulse purpose.
I also don’t understand what anyone who would still know how to make games would be doing at Valve anymore. They’ve barely made a proper game since Dota 2 in 2013 and half of those were by other developers, so what is the average day for a video game developer at Valve? Either they have had a LOT of games cancelled or they get to go home early on a pretty regular basis.
I’d still love it all to be true though, I’m just hurt by the rumours constantly not coming true and, more than that, the completely needless way Valve has turned out. To me it’s worse than Konami. They used to be called the Pixar of video games and now they’re just shopkeepers. I just don’t understand why? When did they start not wanting to make video games? I don’t get it.

Secret opinion
Not long until the release of Luigi’s Mansion 3. Quite looking forward to it but wondering what your opinion of it was so far, having played the demo. The first game was OK but thought the second was amazing on the 3DS. 9 or even 10 our of 10 from me.
Was wondering if you think it has the potential to live up to the second game or not?
Also, have you had your review copy yet?
GC: We do have our review copy, which means we can’t say anything about it yet. The review embargo is a good few days before the release date though.

Fine strategy
I must say John Wick Hex is quite a fine game! Fusing turn-based strategy with action movie choreography is a great blend. I couldn’t stop playing until either I had to take a break or the game was completed. And that’s the main feature of an essential game.
But I don’t like the mode that forces you to make a choice within 5 seconds, as that defeats the purpose of turn-based. I like to take my time. But anyway, fine game!
GC: It is great, one of our favourites of the year.

I’m on way back from Brussels after a couple of days here and there are adverts for Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare all over the metro network.
This I find strange, as didn’t the Belgian government outlaw loot boxes, which are likely to be in the game post-launch? If so, then you can understand Activision’s underhand practices of advertising a game prior to the loot boxes being added. That said, I’m not sure whether having loot boxes in a game bans all advertising of a game over here.
I haven’t seen a single advert for FIFA 20, though…
GC: You can’t ban something until it actually happens; especially as Activision now claim they’ll only have a battle pass in the game.

Winning formula
I got Mortal Kombat 11 on cheap the other day and have been really enjoying it. But then a mate pointed out that it’s actually not played professionally very much and rarely turns up at esports tournaments. This to me is surprising as it’s the best-selling fighting game franchise by quite a way and yet, looking into it, fighting game fans seem to be the only ones that don’t like it.
That doesn’t affect me either way but it makes me wonder why other companies don’t look at this success and try to make their more games more like that, with simpler controls and better story modes. Basically the only other super popular fighter is Smash Bros. and then even things like Street Fighter don’t seem to do that well anymore.
I know they’d be at risk of losing their hardcore fans but it seems to me that there’s a lot more to gain. I wonder if it’s because they’re all Japanese companies and yet the one American-made fighter is the most popular.

Love to hate
It is weird how the whole world seems to have turned on Blizzard all of a sudden. The fact that Nintendo has basically blanked them for the release of Overwatch Is certainly not something I expected to see, especially as it was the lead announcement in one Nintendo Direct not so long ago. Which in turn might have scuppered any chance of a Smash Bros. cameo.
It’s cool to hate Blizzard now and while I do believe they deserve it that is not an easy thing to get out of. It’s a bit like the Bethesda hate, although that’s more centred around Todd Howard, whereas this is the whole of Blizzard that people are loving to hate.

Time sensitive
Just wondering, GC, when you will be going back to the normal twice daily Inbox letters in the evening, now we’ve got to autumn surely your letters from everyone have increased two-fold now the summer’s over? The reason why I mention this is due to the fact that on Thursday The Game Collection on eBay had a one day offer of 20% discount off everything from the brand new Switch Lite hand held consoles, the brand new COD Modern Warfare game right through to the newly released Mini Sega Mega drive! Everything was 20% off the RRP by just popping in POPULAR20 in the discount code box.
I’ve just bagged myself the Capcom Home Arcade console, now officially due out on 8 November for just £159.99 with a massive £40 off and free delivery as well. Happy days! So if this letter does get published on Friday it will be too late for all our readers to take advantage of this fabulous offer.
GC: The number of emails is still too low, sometimes we only just have enough for one Inbox. As usual it seems to be because everyone else assumes others are sending in plenty.

Inbox also-rans
GC, is Sony still planning to release Dreams? I keep thinking it’s out and then find out it’s only early access. Since I don’t like working as unpaid QA when is it actually going to be out and finished? I thought they said it was this year.
GC: It’s been in early access since April but there doesn’t seem to be any kind of official release date, or even year.
I don’t know whether those new Sonic The Hedgehog images are real or not but the one question I wanted answered is: will Sonic have a human love interest in the film? Only then will it truly be the very worst it can be.

This week’s Hot Topic
The subject for this weekend’s Inbox was suggested by reader Onibee, who asks what classic video game would you most like to see get a remake?
Remakes – as opposed to remasters, which merely increase the resolution and make other minor improvements – are becoming increasingly commonplace, with the recent Zelda: Link’s Awakening , the upcoming Final Fantasy VII Remake , and news that Bluepoint are working on a major new remake for Sony .
So what other game would you like to see get the treatment and why? Who would you like to develop it and what changes would you like to see in terms of graphics and gameplay?
