Dota 2 team takes home $15m for back-to-back win at The International 2019

Team OG have a lot to celebrate
Team OG have won The International for a second time in a row and pocketed £12.7 million – more than you get for Wimbledon or Fortnite .
The winner of this year’s Dota 2 championship is the same as last year, as they take home the biggest prize in video games esports.
European team OG has won the ninth International event for two years in a row, taking home a combined $15,607,638 (£12.7m) in prize money for the team as a whole.
Assuming they split the money evenly that means the five team members walk away with around £2.5 million each. That’s £250,000 more than if you win Wimbledon and slightly more than the £2.4 million winning prize for the recent Fortnite World Cup .

Although the career of an esports player can be perilously short, the final was almost a straight repeat of last year, until Chinese team PSG.LGD were knocked out in the semi-finals by Dutch group Team Liquid.
Since they’re based in the same city, PSG.LGD’s exit caused some upset at the Shanghai event, which took part in the packed, 13,000 capacity, Mercedes-Benz Arena.
OG’s win was attributed to a new tactic based on using a support-only hero as a damage-dealing carry, with the team not losing a single match when they used the strategy.
They won the final 3-1 and have booked themselves a place in the 2020 event that will be held in Stockholm, the first since The International began in 2011.

Taking advantage of all the interest in the game, Valve also choose this weekend to unveil two new heroes for the game: Snapfire and Void Spirit.
There was no gameplay footage of either but as one of ‘spirit brothers’ Void Spirit will also be appearing in mobile game Dota Underlords .
Dota 2 is completely free-to-play so if you fancy seeing what the fuss is about – and maybe going for that prize yourself – you can download it from Steam .
