Games Inbox: Owning every console, Switch Lite vs. Switch Pro, and Shenmue III season pass

How many do you own?
The Evening Inbox is starting to feel more positive about the Switch Lite, as one reader asks for help remembering some games.

PLEASE NOTE: The Evening Inbox will be back this week as a trial, but we still barely had enough letters for today’s edition. If you still want there to be two Inboxes a day we need more letters on a consistent basis, and without taking away from the Hot Topic and Reader’s Feature – which we also do not have enough of at the moment.

Too much of a good thing
RE: Recent discussion on gaming budgets. I’ve been in the enviable position this gen of being able to buy what I want. That’ll change soon with a likely property purchase.
The result is I own a PC, PS4 Pro, PlayStation VR, PlayStation 3, and Xbox One S. The amount of devices is not the problems, but the amount of games I have sitting on them: over 400.
I concur with a recent letter saying that they had to extract every last drop of entertainment from a game as a child, as they only got a couple a year.
Being spoilt for choice is nice but a bit like children, when you get everything handed to you on a plate it can mean you don’t value each individual thing as much as if you only had a few things. In this case the games themselves.
Going forward I will still want to own all the devices as they home the thing I enjoy: games. But my game buying habits will change. Far fewer bought, finish games before buying again, don’t be lured by sales, etc.
The sales tactics for the gaming industry for a long time involved a lot of hyperbole, still does I guess. That you’ll be missing out on the best thing ever if you didn’t buy the advertised product.
Having now been in the position of not having to miss out on anything I’ve seen you’re not missing out much if you don’t own most of what’s available.
You’re much better of playing, investing your time in and absorbing one Zelda: Breath Of The Wild or Hollow Knight than 20 decent but not quite as memorable games. Quality over quantity.

Today’s issue
Another day and it seems there is more happening with Shenmue III; season passes, exclusive pre-orders, and exclusive Kickstarter content. Some backers are not happy that they aren’t getting this stuff as a bonus.
I backed the game and may be interested in the season pass content (if it is worthwhile), so I will see what the season pass will be offering and stump up the cash if it appeals to me.
I’ve been waiting to continue this adventure for a long time and even if they were to release an exclusive machine for me to play it on, I’m playing it!
Now, excuse me while I go and kiss my Dreamcast.

Known problem
Over the last couple of days, when reading Metro on my iPhone, as I scroll down, a little tab will appear near the top right of the screen saying ‘Next Story’, then if my thumb swipes even a fraction to the right when swiping down the page reloads to the GameCentral menu page.
It’s quite frustrating!
Dominic
GC: We’ve had a lot of complaints about this today, and auto-loading new stories, and have passed them onto IT, who are currently working to fix it. If there’s ever something like that on the site that’s causing problems just email us and we can usually do something about it.

A simple plan
When you factor in the lost features of the Switch Regular (what’ll be its new official name?), I don’t think the Lite is really that much cheaper. No dock, no HDMI output, no HD Rumble, no infrared camera… also, completely removing the whole unique selling point of the Switch.
I guess they believe the improved profit margins of selling each Switch Lite vastly outweighs the potential confusion it could cause for the average consumer.

Now playing: Lego Batman 3 and Borderlands Pre-Sequel
GC: We don’t think their plan is any more convoluted than it’s cheaper, so it will appeal to more/different people.

Switch Maxi
Agree with Ashton’s letter on the Switch Lite. I’m usually reluctant to draw anything from the comments sections of Internet news sites (…usually trolls) but the number of complaints on the Switch Lite has been odd. Nintendo are obviously leaning on the bottom end of the market with this one, kids and people who don’t already own a Switch but maybe own a PlayStation 4/Xbox for TV play. It’s obviously not aimed at existing owners.
Given the price this could be more popular than the base unit. I did have Wii U flashbacks though… especially around the confusion a lot of people had around the hardware itself, and this was on gaming and tech websites. Whether it was HDMI out for TV play was the main one and I did think that non-‘clued up’ gamers who pick one up might be in for a rude shock when they can’t play local multiplayer Mario Kart without an extra investment in Joy-Cons or Zelda on their TVs. When your explanation isn’t just ‘the same but smaller’ to parents buying presents a problem might be brewing…
Anyway, hopefully this Switch Lite and talk of a Switch family means that an upgraded Switch is on the way. The current rumours seem likely to be that the regular Switch will be given the more efficient chip out of the Lite, but I’m talking about a proper Switch XL.
I’m handheld-only but actually want a bigger console not a more portable one, even the Switch Lite you’d need to carry in a bag, so max it out! Something about the size of an 8-inch Android tablet would be perfect, and really… pretty much already exists with the same internals in the old Nvidia Shield. Though stretching a 720p screen across that might throw up some visible pixel issues.

Portable only
With all this Switchless talk I wanted to wade in and echo some other’s comments. First off, calm down people. If you don’t want it then don’t buy it. It really is that simple.
Secondly, I do wonder if something was written in Japanese and then misinterpreted at some point. The Switch Lite is clearly still designed to fit into the dock. It may just be for charging and probably is, it may be that they intended it to still work in a dock up until the last minute, who knows. But it’s also possible that they meant ‘it has no dock with it so can’t be used on the TV’… but it still works in a dock, and the marketing department took that as ‘it doesn’t work with a TV’.
The direct was very to the point, but I’m suspicious it wasn’t or isn’t as clean cut.

GC: We’re pretty sure they would’ve checked that. The website and the video makes it very clear it doesn’t work on a TV.

Contra-esque
Good afternoon fellas. First of all: please tell me you guys are going to be reviewing Blazing Chrome imminently? It looks like an amazing run and gun shooter!
Switching to a different subject… the Switch Lite sounds like a perfectly logical and economically viable proposition to me.
But it doesn’t particularly suit my needs. So on second thoughts, I think it’s a rubbish idea…
Joking aside, I’m thinking of picking one up for my seven and eight-year-old nephews to stop them from pestering me to play (and potentially drop…) my one.

PS: Keep up the great work guys and long may the Inbox flourish!
GC: That Blazing Chrome does look pretty good. As long as the emails keep coming we’ll continue with the Evening Inbox next week. We are still very short of Reader’s Features though.

16 years off the zeitgeist
Does nobody else start singing Judgement Boy’s little intro song whenever they see or hear this new Yakuza game, Judgment come up? There definitely should be an ‘e’ there, right?
Regardless, I kept expecting everyone else to reference it – but apparently Gregory’s Horror Show is too long in the tooth now. ‘Do you know his name? Judgement Boy!’
Because, you know, if you try to weigh your love against your money, your heart will start to break.
DMR
GC: The American spelling for judgement, which is what the game uses, does not have an ‘e’.

Name those games
Right, so I have memories of these four games existing: one from the late 90s/early 2000s and three from the mid 2000s to now, but I haven’t seen/heard anything about them aside from screenshots/demos and I’m wondering if GC or readers could possibly remember their names, if they came out and if they were any good.
The first one from the late 90s/early 2000s had you playing as a cherub in a sort of gritty, sci-fi game where you could possess soldiers (I think?) and make them kill each other brutally.
The second game is a first person shooter from the mid-2000s and casts you as a member of the FBI (I think?) and has you dealing with an alien threat in a 1950s America town. The aliens are black ‘gunk’ and in the demo I saw, the main characters wide was possessed by one of these aliens.
The last two were from the last couple of years, with the first being a first person shooter set in the Louisiana swamps fighting monsters (vampires I think?) With the final game having you play as a you graffiti tagger who could make his creations come to life.
The_Breakfast_Boy
GC: The cherub one is Messiah, from Shiny Entertainment. It was flawed but interesting. We’re not sure about the FBI one but it sounds a bit like The Bureau: XCOM Declassified , although that was third person. The third one is possibly Hunt: Showdown , but we don’t know that there are any vampires in it. The fourth is almost certainly Concrete Genie , which we also liked the look of and is due out this autumn. Unless readers can suggest any better matches.

Inbox also-rans
I’m seeing the upset caused by the new Switch Lite being called a Switch when you can’t switch from portable to docked. Maybe they could market it as the ‘Itch’? It certainly seems to be irritating people… Ta!
BadgerOfDoom
Thanks for all your hard work and the great coverage from E3. Here’s my Brexit-themed Mario Maker 2 level code: JVS-BXO GGF.
Mr X
PS: I’ve read Nintendo take down levels for ‘inappropriate content’. Is this the sort of thing that could be targeted? There’s nothing in it and just intended as harmless fun… suitable for Remainers and Brexiteers!
GC: If they do let us know!

This week’s Hot Topic
The subject for this weekend’s Inbox was suggested by reader Hatton, who asks what video game do you most regret playing?
What game do you feel ended up being a waste of your time, regardless of how much you paid for it in the first place? Did you stop straight away and how often do you usually give a game before you give up on it?
Was the problem that you didn’t enjoy the gameplay or story, or was it too difficult or time consuming? Did you still finish the game and if not how often do you end up giving up on a video game before beating it – or at least spending a substantial amount of time on it?
