Nintendo boss says Switch Pro is not coming this year – Switch Lite won’t replace 3DS

Nintendo has confirmed an upgraded version of the Nintendo Switch console won’t be released this year, following the announcement of the Switch Lite.
The new portable-only version of the Switch was revealed yesterday , which doesn’t connect to the TV or have detachable Joy-Con controllers.
A cheaper model of the Switch has been rumoured for a while, along with the possibility of a more expensive, upgraded version in a similar vein to the PS4 Pro.
Nintendo of America president Doug Bowser, however, has since addressed whether a ‘Switch Pro’ console is in the pipeline to CNET , stating not to expect any more hardware this year.

Referring to the Switch Lite in the article, it reads: ‘It’ll also be the only new Nintendo Switch hardware this holiday, as Bowser says the larger Switch won’t get an upgrade right now.’
He also stated the Lite and original Switch console will ‘complement each other and coexist in the market’.
Bowser has also reassured to Verge there’s no plans to discontinue production on the Nintendo 3DS following the Switch Lite announcement.
‘We’ll continue to support our 3DS family of systems as long as there is demand,’ Bowser said.

Interestingly, Nintendo might be upgrading the original Switch via more subtle means, with new filings from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) showing plans for a new processor and flash storage.
The specific filing requests a ‘change of SoC’ type – relating to the current Nvidia Tegra X1 system-on-chip. It also asks for a ‘change of NAND Memory type’ aka the flash storage.
It’s unclear if these upgrades relate to a new expensive model, although it sounds more likely to be a smaller upgrade to the original Switch.
The Switch Lite is set to released on 20 September, priced at £199.99 in the UK.
