Nintendo Switch Lite portable console announced – out this September

Nintendo Switch Lite – smaller and cheaper
The rumours were true: Nintendo is releasing a portable-only version of the Switch that works with most games but doesn’t connect to a TV.

It always seemed like a no-brainer, but despite denying it for months – and failing to unveil it at E3 in June – Nintendo has officially announced the Switch Lite: a portable-only version of the original Switch console.
As you can see in the video below the console does not have detachable Joy-Cons and cannot connect to a TV or use the Switch dock.
It also doesn’t have HD rumble or an IR camera, but the controls are slightly different with a proper D-pad on the left.

The new console will be out on 20 September, but Nintendo aren’t allowed to dictate prices in the Europe so there’s no RRP.
It costs $199.99 (£160) in the US though, which is $100 less than the original Switch was at launch. So hopefully the UK price will work out at £200 or less.
The Switch Lite is 8.2″ long, 3.6″ high, and .55″ deep, while the original is 9.4″ long, 4″ high, and .55″ deep. The touchscreen is smaller too, at 5.5″ to 6.2″.
Battery life isn’t much different, with Nintendo promising three to seven hours instead of 2.5 to 6.5. It is quite a bit lighter though at .61 lbs to .88 lbs.
The Switch that doesn’t switch
Because there are no Joy-Cons that means the Switch Lite won’t be 100% compatible with all games. It won’t work with 1-2-Switch (which is fine, because it’s not very good) without using separate Joy-Cons and it’ll also be no good for Nintendo Labo.
Mario Tennis Aces’ motion controls also won’t work without separate Joy-Cons and neither will indie game SnipperClips.
Most other normal games will be fine though, if they already work in handheld mode with the original Switch. There’s also no kickstand on the Switch Lite though so it really is meant as just a portable.

The console will be available in three colours: yellow, grey, and turquoise. But there’ll also be a special Zacian & Zamazenta version to coincide with the release of Pokémon Sword and Shield.
In fact, the release of that game on 15 November is probably the whole reason Nintendo has waited till now to reveal the Switch Lite.
These are going to be popular at Christmas…
