PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds – what’s the story here?

Fortnite might have all the mindshare, particularly in the West, but as the game which popularised battle royale PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds (aka PUBG) is far from yesterday’s news.
As a report earlier today revealed the game sold 4.7 million copies last year and is huge on mobile, particularly in China.
But rather than rely on just the original game a new studio called Striking Distance has just been formed to ‘create an original narrative experience within the PUBG universe’.

Since PUBG doesn’t really have a plot there’s no clue what kind of stories they may be (although we’re guessing not romantic comedies) but what has been announced is that the new studio is being headed up by Dead Space and Call Of Duty veteran Glen Schofield.
The video above offers little in the way of solid information but Schofield talks about having ‘the freedom to explore the PUBG universe’ and moving beyond just battle royale.
Schofield has been in the games industry since the early 90s but made his name as one of the co-creators of Dead Space at EA before becoming a co-founder of Sledgehammer Studios, where he worked on Modern Warfare 3, Advanced Warfare, and WWII.

Sledgehammer were supposed to be doing next year’s Call Of Duty but rumours suggest turmoil at Activision led to Black Ops 4 developer Treyarch taking over instead.
The behind the scenes politics may be the reason behind both Schofield and fellow Sledgehammer co-founder Michael Condrey recently leaving Activision.
Condrey is heading up a new studio for Take-Two Interactive, although it’s not yet been officially announced and it’s unknown what kind of game he’s working on.
