Marvel’s Avengers is four-player games as a service title – out May 2020

Marvel’s Avengers – Earth’s mightiest heroes
Square Enix has finally unveiled its long-awaited Avengers game, letting your play as Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Hulk, and Black Widow.

They promised the reveal was coming at E3 and now we finally know what kind of game Marvel’s Avengers is, and. as predicted. it’s a live service co-op game that will be constantly added to over time.
There didn’t seem to be any actual gameplay footage in what was shown, but the implication is that it’s a third person action game where you can play as either Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Hulk, or Black Widow – with up to four people playing together at once (although you can also play on your own).
The game isn’t set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe but seems to be taking the same approach as Sony’s Spider-Man game, where the characters are similar to their movie counterparts but also integrate additional elements from the comics.

The story revolves around an ‘A-Day’ event where the Avengers mess-up and it’s implied many innocent civilians are killed. It’s not clear who the bad guy is though, with all the ones in the trailer appearing to be no-name mercenaries.
More will be revealed about the gameplay tomorrow, when E3 proper begins (technically everything up till now has been pre-show events) and we already have an appointment booked to see the game in person.
Perhaps the biggest question about the game has already been answered though, with Square Enix confirming that it is a game as a service title, i.e. a game like Destiny or GTA Online which is constantly updated with new, free content.
This will apparently include a ‘growing roster’ of characters, with what is presumably Hank Pym, aka Ant-Man, featured in one of the trailers. (You can hear the audience asking about Hawkeye, but there’s no answer on that yet.)
There will also be new regions, and no doubt villains, being added over time, all of which will also be free.
Marvel’s Avengers – the gang’s all here (except Hawkeye)
At the same time Square Enix, and developer Crystal Dynamics (Tomb Raider) and Eidos Montréal (Deus Ex) made a point to say that there’ll be no ‘random’ loot boxes or pay-to-win scenarios.
They’ve got to pay for those updates somehow though, and the most obvious guess is via cosmetic microtransactions of some kind.

Marvel’s Avengers will be released on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Stadia, and PC but the PlayStation 4 version will get early beta access and unspecified ‘unique benefits’.
The game will be released on all formats on 15 May, 2020 but there was no indication when the beta, early or otherwise, would start.
