Watch Dogs 3 rumours return as new trademark discovered

Watch Dogs 2 – is the new sequel going next gen?
It looks like Ubisoft could be warming up another sequel to Watch Dogs, but will it be a current gen game, net gen, or both?

You can’t fault Ubisoft for not knowing what to do with Watch Dogs. It was one of the first games ever revealed for the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 – back before the consoles themselves had been announced – and when released went on to become the fastest-selling Ubisoft game, and new IP, of the time.
But opinion quickly turned against the game, with fans upset that the graphics never looked as good as the initial trailers and that the gameplay was little more than an above average Grand Theft Auto clone.
Two years later, the sequel was released to considerably less interest but was actually a much better game – even though it was a sales disappointment.
Rumours of a third title have been doing the rounds for years, but a new trademark filing by Ubisoft suggests something could finally be happening.

The trademark, as noticed by YouTube Skullzi , was filed last December but only became public this month. That in itself could mean anything though, including the fact that Ubisoft are just making sure they hang onto the name and have no intention of making a new game.
Ubisoft has hinted at Watch Dogs 3 multiple times before though, most blatantly last February when it went to the trouble of extending Watch Dogs 2’s ending.
The new version only had a few seconds of extra dialogue but mentioned the Middle East and Europe and showed onscreen coordinates for Brixton in London.

The previous games were set in Chicago and San Francisco, so a sequel set outside the US would certainly be welcome, but Ubisoft hasn’t said anything official since a very vague tweet last April and some apparent teasing via their virtual assistant.
But with a new Far Cry out this week, The Division shortly after, and another Assassin’s Creed not due until next year it’s not obvious what Ubisoft’s big name release would be this Christmas.
That could be the spot that Watch Dogs 3 is looking to fill. Or they could be trying to repeat the same marketing trick as the first game, by unveiling at E3 this year and releasing for both current and next gen consoles the year after.
