Weekend Hot Topic, part 1: Most anticipated games of 2019

Far Cry: New Dawn – Mad Max without the desert
GameCentral readers name the games they’re most looking forward to this year, from Resident Evil 2 to Shenmue III.
As the first Hot Topic of the year the subject for this weekend’s Inbox was a pretty obvious one. We’d already provided a list of confirmed and potential releases for this year, and all we wanted is for you to tell us which ones you’re most excited about.
Especially because of how soon it’s out, Resident Evil 2 was the runaway favourite but there was also plenty of mentions for everything from Metro Exodus to Kingdom Hearts III. A lot of people were really hoping for The Last Of Us Part II as well, but it doesn’t yet have a confirmed release date.

Everything was Resident Evil
I assume that everyone is going to say Resident Evil 2 but since that’s an obvious choice, and more importantly is out very soon, I’ll go ahead and say Far Cry: New Dawn instead. Although I admit I keep forgetting what the subtitle is and had to look that up, so maybe it’s not sticking in my mind quite as much as it should.
Far Cry 5 was one of my favourite games of 2018 though and I really liked the look of *checks name* New Dawn, so I’m pretty much sold already. We’ve had a lot of Mad Max style games so far, but while Rage 2 does look potentially good the New Dawn (got it!) trailer seemed to be the only one that really riffed on the under siege aspect that’s so important to the second one and, to a degree the third and fourth.
A lot of people just seem to copy the desert setting and leave it at that but this seems more like it’s got the whole change of society and the battle between the order and chaos a bit better pegged. I imagine it’s all going to boil down to taking over safehouses as usual, but I hope they find a way to make better use of vehicles and shake it up a little.

No spoilers
Looking over the list of 2019 games I am most interested in Kingdom Hearts III.
I’ve been wanting this game for years and now it is finally in sight. I’ve avoided the videos and screenshots as much as possible so I get a fresh as an experience as possible. The Tuesday release is still weird to me though!
I kickstarted Shemnue III and so am looking forward to finally getting my money’s worth.
But based on the listed titles I will be getting a Nintendo Switch as the games that appeal most to me are on this console…

Five hits and a maybe
The list of confirmed games for 2019 looks pretty disappointing. I am sure there will be a number of games I play but there is little there that excites me enough to classify it as a must buy. The ones that interest most are:

Anthem – The initial look was great but with nothing seen since my anticipation level has dropped all the way down to trepidation.
Luigi’s Mansion 3 – I am sure it will be great but I did not get very far with 2, which I should probably return too.
Psychonauts 2 – A new game in this series is a welcome prospect but I have seen nothing of it. I did like the PlayStation VR game though.
Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice – I fully expect this to be excellent but I still need to go back to Bloodborne, where I only reached Father Gascoigne.
And a Switch Pokémon game will probably convince me to return to the series after a long hiatus since the third generation.

GameCentral’s list of possible games however is far more appealing, with Last Of Us Part II in particular being a game I fully expect to buy on launch day. It is a sequel I did not want as I thought the first game was excellent as a standalone experience but I fully expect it to be of the very high quality Naughty Dog are now known for.

Successful formula
As a PlayStation 4 owner I feel we had a great year last year but I’m not so sure what to exactly look forward to this year, at least in terms of exclusives. I’m not interested in MediEvil or Dreams, which only leaves the dodgy-looking Days Gone as confirmed for this year. I’m hoping The Last Of Us Part II will make it out, but if it doesn’t then Ghost Of Tsushima also looks very good.
I know both are using the ‘Sony formula’ but considering how that’s worked out with the last few games it’s hard to see that as too much of a bad thing. I think The Last Of Us could be the perfect way to wrap up the PlayStation 4, although just saying that makes it sound like more of a 2020 title.
In terms of other stuff, there’s Resident Evil 2 of course but I’m one that’s also hoping Anthem is good and am looking forward to trying Ace Combat 7 for the VR at least. The line-up for 2019 is looking good, with more potential than last year, but we’ll have to see how many of these actually make it out or not.

A licence far, far away
2019 does look like a good year, in theory at least, but I’m going to pick Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order as my choice. Not because I know anything about it – I don’t think anyone does – but because I’m just so sick of not having any decent Star Wars video games. Disney has dropped the ball just as heavily as they did with the recent two movies and now we’re getting less games than when there were no new films! A total disaster, and what happened to more VR games and a space combat game?
I’m also interested in Resident Evil 2, obviously, and I’m hoping that Bayonetta 3 and, ideally, Metroid Prime 4 will come out this year. The signs are kind of good that Nintendo has a much bigger line-up than last year so my hopes are high that 2017 is just going to end up as a blip for them.
Also looking forward to Metro Exodus and I really liked the sound of The Outer Worlds when it was revealed. Hopefully it’ll be the true Fallout sequel we never really got (and I’d kind of include Fallout 4 in that).

Half open
The game I’m most looking forward to is Metro Exodus, even bought myself a fancy new RTX graphics card so I can play it in all its glory with the ray-tracing turned on.
The series is one of my favourites. The atmosphere in the first two games was hard to beat, though it might not be the same in an open world.

Popular choice
Hmm, I wonder what most people are going to pick? It’s a real puzzler, is it not? Yeah, like most others, the upcoming remake of Resident Evil 2 is my most anticipated. Of course, by the time the Hot Topic letters have been published, we’ll all have had a chance to sample it! And just two short weeks later, we’ll own it!
It’s very likely that this is going to be game of the year for 2019. In January. Unless Nintendo have an ace up their sleeve – and they might. Devil May Cry 5 is looking great too, so Capcom are going to be having a good year.
Later on we’ll have Mortal Kombat 11 – we get more info on it come January 17th, right? NetherRealm get better and better and so it’s not implausible that they could produce a fighter of the generation contender. Dead Or Alive 6? Probably less likely in a series that has almost consistently rolled out decent, 7 out of 10 fighters, but you never know.
Shenmue III is another one I am dying to get a hold of. I think there’s likely to be another short delay announced – probably only a few weeks, though at most. I don’t doubt that I’ll enjoy it but the question is whether it can be an improvement on its predecessor. You don’t need an incredible budget to make an incredible game, but has Yu Suzuki and his team been able to give the project the care and attention it needs and deserves? We won’t know until we play it…
