Games Inbox: Resident Evil 2 1-Shot demo love, Parkitect perfection, and Alien: Blackout defence

Resident Evil 2 1-Shot – available now
The evening Inbox is wary of Activision being used as a Destiny scapegoat, as one reader asks why the next gen is necessary.

On target
Oh my jeebus! I just played the Resident Evil 2 1-Shot demo and it is 101% everything I hoped (well, not the demo exactly although I do think the whole 30 minute time limit is a neat idea). Resident Evil 2 was my favourite game ever back in the day and this is literally how I imagined it being redone… like as if it’s just been pulled out of my brain.
Of course all the previews and videos have prepared us for goodness but like GC said when they played it, it just seems to be that perfect balance between old and new, including the good old Resident Evil cheese. Plus it’s still scary! Resi really is a magic formula and it’s obvious the movies never understood it, or the legion of wannabe copycats.
If pre-ordering was I thing I did I would’ve done this day zero but I’m so glad to be able to play it now and see that it is exactly what I was hoping for. Full power to Capcom putting in so much effort. Roll on January 25 and roll on Resident Evil 3 remake (and Dino Crisis)!

3 for the price of 1
So I tried the Resident Evil 2 1-Shot demo and it was amazing, I got quite far in terms of distance but didn’t really do anything consequential.
But at least I have two more tries left. How you ask? I have a total of three different PSN accounts and I’ve checked my American account still shows 30 minutes left.

New Tycoon
Prior to Christmas I wrote in about how I was looking forward to playing a game over Christmas called Parkitect. A spiritual successor to the old Roller Coaster Tycoon games. There has been Planet Coaster released in the past couple of years, which is regularly updated with new content, but despite it being a great game it left me dissatisfied, not scratching that same itch that Roller Coaster Tycoon did back in the day. In Parkitect though I have found what I have been looking for.
Parkitect goes back to the isometric style of the Roller Coaster Tycoon games rather than the fully 3D parks found in Planet Coaster, but the art style is still very attractive. What I think it does better than Planet Coaster is the park management aspects, which are deep but very simple to get your head around and manage efficiently. I have found everything about it far more simple than Planet Coaster, which reminded me of LittleBigPlanet in that you can create some incredible things if you have the skill and time but otherwise you end up creating something pants.
If you enjoyed the Roller Coaster Tycoon games but found Planet Coaster overwhelming in its customisation I would definitely recommend checking Parkitect out, plus it can run on even low spec computers.

Pretty good
Have to say, despite not being on my radar at all, Assassin’s Creed Odyssey is really scratching an itch.
I’ve not enjoyed an Assassin’s Creed since Black Flag and sacked off Origins after 30 minutes because I knew what was coming for the next millennia of gameplay. However, I picked Odyssey up cheap at Tesco and, despite a bumpy start, it’s a fantastic game. Sure, it’s as repetitive as these games tend to be, and it seems to be lifting from Far Cry more than usual, but it’s utterly gorgeous.
I’ve no doubt I’ll have had my fill long before seeing the end but at the moment it’s spot on.

Less for more
Really interesting stats about the UK games industry, seems like a lot of the big games did see a drop after all. Sad thing is though I imagine most publishers would probably be fine with making more money off less people. It’s basically how whales work with microtransactions on mobile games, which I’m sure is what they’ve been aiming for all along.
Can’t say I’m too upset to see EA and Activision on the downward slide though, they deserve for all their bad practices (EA especially) and boring, super safe sequels. If the Destiny thing ends up forcing Activision to actually make some new games once in a while I’ll see it as a good thing.
Surprising to see even Ubisoft on the decline though, even if it’s not by as much as the others. Not surprised to see Bethesda having a bad yet though and you’d have to say they probably earned it too.

Tenth generation VR
I just had to echo my thoughts to when you put on the VR headset for the first time and dive into that first game.
I picked up my headset in the Black Friday event. It came with PlayStation VR Worlds, Astro Bot, and Resident Evil 7 for £180. An early Xmas present to me and I’m hooked totally. And what with the sales on the store I have a rapidly growing collection.
Moss, Rez Infinite, Thumper, Until Dawn: Rush Of Blood, EVE Valkyrie, Superhot, WipEout, The Persistence, Firewall Zero Hour, Batman: Arkham VR to name a few, well a lot! Oh and Skyrim, how did I nearly forget that.
I can’t wait to see where VR is at not only for the next gen consoles but for when the PlayStation 6 will be around, say 15 years time and all the technological advancements we will (should) have made. Ready Player One anyone?
I can’t wait.
Great reviews as ever GC, from a VVVVLTR from the teletext era!

GC: That’s a shockingly good deal you got on Black Friday.

Blame game
So I guess the story now is going to be that Activision forced all the bad decisions on Destiny and that Bungie were the innocent developer trying to fight against the evil publisher. You’ll excuse me if I don’t exactly believe that. Ignoring the fact that Bungie chose Activision, not the other way around, all the stuff about hiding stats, not communicating with fans, and never having enough content sounds like it’s totally down to Bungie.
I’m not saying they’re evil either but if Activision are going to be turned into some sort of scapegoat I think that’s going to come across as a bit rich.

Need has nothing to do with it
I really don’t understand all this talk about the next generation of consoles, GC? Why on Earth does anybody need another generation of consoles, especially in this day and age? Especially when we have the luxury of the PS4 Pro or Xbox One X available. I mean, when we’ve all been treated to games like God Of War, Red Dead Redemption II, Spider-Man, etc., etc. how much better can gaming be?
I guess it’s just Microsoft that want to have a next gen console race again, so they can have at least another chance of beating Sony at their own game this time round? Yes, I understand the PlayStation VR would be better with more horsepower running from a more powerful console but what with all the late sales surge like myself I bet there was more people who bought the PlayStation VR last year then when it was released back in 2016 due to the massive price drops/deals available on the high streets.
Do we really need a next gen yet, guys? Yes, developers may have got the last juice out of the current hardware we currently have but really how much better and what will be any better in the next generation of consoles? Sorry, but I just don’t get it. I really don’t’!
GC: It’s actually Sony that started talking about the next gen first, because sales of the PlayStation 4 are slowing. Gaming is a business and that’s what leads all such decisions.

Inbox also-rans
I see there’s been more fan outrage about Alien: Blackout, similar to the Diablo mobile game. Some people are just deranged. As if the same developer would be making the mobile game as the console (not to mention the mobile game actually sounds quite cool).
Nice to see Catherine making a comeback, I had no idea about the PlayStation 4 remaster. But holey moley at the fact there’s a competitive scene for the game, that’s hilarious!

This week’s Hot Topic
As the first Hot Topic of the year the subject for this weekend’s Inbox is obvious: what new games are you most looking forward to in 2019?
You can find a list of all the most prominent titles here , but feel free to suggest anything else that is confirmed for this year – but please don’t use games that are either unannounced or have only vague release dates (so no Half-Life 3 or Bayonetta 3).
Why are you looking forward to the games so much and how well do you expect them to do in terms of sales and reviews? What do you think of this year’s line-up in general, in comparison to 2018 and other recent years?
