In not-so shocking news, it turns out Bethesda ’s next gen update is full of bugs, including some that can wipe your save file.

The PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S will be four years old this Christmas and yet it’s taken until now for Bethesda to release a ‘next gen’ patch for the nine-year-old Fallout 4 . Thanks to the Amazon TV show it’s been much anticipated but, in what in hindsight seems inevitable news, it’s turned out to be a bit of a disappointment.

Bethesda are renowned for their highly detailed open world games, full of secrets and hidden stories, but they’re also equally well know for the fact that their games are always filled with bugs and glitches, and that was certainly always true for Fallout 4.

The update, which is also available on PC (but is currently being blocked for PlayStation 5 owners who got it via PS Plus ), has seen many reporting problems loading modded saves, crashes, and other bugs, as well as a lack of significant change in terms of graphics.

We’ll have a full report on our experiences with the PlayStation 5 version later today, but so far we’ve experienced few problems – with many of the bugs seeming to be focused on the PC version and its more extensive use of modded content.

There are reports of saves not loading or even being corrupted, as well as other random bugs and glitches that weren’t previously in the game.

One of the most common complaints though is that the improvement in graphics is very minor and barely noticeable in most cases.

Again, this seems to be more obvious on PC, which still doesn’t offer support for frame rates over 60fps and has a botched interface for the new ultrawide monitor support.

The general consensus amongst PC users seems to be that they’d rather not have had the patch at all, since it breaks many existing mods and has caused more problems than it’s worth (including delaying the eagerly anticipated Fallout London ).

The update does include some new content but that’s available separately on Xbox One and PlayStation 4, and it seems like that would’ve been the better option for PC as well – since fans have been updating and improving the graphics for years anyway.

Bethesda has yet to comment on the problems and it may be some days before the full extent of the issues are known on both consoles and PC.
