Fallout 76 hits all-time peak as Fallout 4 players double thanks to TV show

The positive buzz around the Fallout TV series has generated renewed interest in the games, as Fallout 76 reaches a record high player count on Steam.

Ever since Sonic The Hedgehog and The Last Of Us , video game adaptations have enjoyed a new sense of legitimacy and, more importantly for publishers, financial success. You don’t even need to have had a new entry recently, for there to be a knock-on effect with game sales, as Bethesda has found with the Fallout series.

After the Amazon series launched last week, multiple Fallout games have seen their player numbers spike on Steam. Over the weekend, Fallout 4 , first released in 2015, managed to break into the Steam top 20 with a peak player count of 83,491.

Fallout 76 has also seen renewed interest and on Sunday reached a new record peak on Steam, with 39,455 people playing the online spin-off.

SteamDB’s Twitter account highlighted the player increase across Fallout 4, Fallout 76, and Fallout: New Vegas over the weekend, showing how the concurrent player numbers had ‘more than doubled’ following the show’s launch.

As noted by industry analyst Mat Piscatella on Twitter , Fallout 76 is also seeing its highest engagement rate on Xbox Series X/S since October 2022, according to player tracking data.

Along with the TV show, the boost in player numbers was likely aided by Fallout 3, Fallout: New Vegas, and Fallout 76 all being available for free if you’re an Amazon Prime subscriber. Fallout 4, meanwhile, has been reduced to £3.99 on Steam.

For those who haven’t yet jumped into Fallout 4, you might be better off waiting for the upcoming next gen update on April 25 . This will boost the frame rate to 60fps, increase the resolution, and offer various other new options.

The next gen update has forced the creators of the Fallout London mod, which was slated to come out on April 23, to push back its release date due to the complications a new update might cause.

‘As you can imagine, this will impact us and cause complications for our release,’ mod co-creator Dean Carter said in a video.

‘On the technical front, being able to play Fallout: London with the new potential engine improvements and the performance upgrades is fantastic,’ he added. ‘It’s going to mean that we can push the engine even harder than we’ve already pushed it, so we’re gonna get these great quality-of-life improvements in the mod.

‘It’s simply not just the case of blocking the updates and hoping for the best because if you don’t do it properly, it’ll also break, and we can’t just ask you to drag things back in time – that’s just not on the cards.’

The fact that the games were free is obviously a major factor here but, even so, it may encourage Bethesda to accelerate development on Fallout 5 , which isn’t expected to come out for many years yet.

Bethesda Game Studios is currently working on The Elder Scrolls 6 and even if they started parallel development of Fallout 5 now – which it’s not clear they have the capacity for – the game would be lucky to release this decade.
