The second game in the Final Fantasy 7 remake trilogy is out now, so here’s all you need to know about the game and its predecessor.

Square Enix is remaking 1997’s Final Fantasy 7 with not one but three games, and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is the second title in the trilogy, after 2020’s Final Fantasy 7 Remake .

Rebirth has been received very well so far, with the action role-playing game described as ‘an object lesson in how to turn an old classic into a modern masterpiece’ in our review .

It’s only right then, that we look closer at Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth’s release date, which special editions of the game you can buy, and if you need to play Final Fantasy 7 Remake first.

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth release date

Rebirth launches on Thursday, February 29 and is a PlayStation 5 exclusive title.

Although it’s only available on PlayStation 5 at launch, Square Enix has revealed that Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth could end up on other formats , as it’s exclusivity deal only lasts for three months – until May 29.

Even if it eventually comes to PC, or even Xbox, porting the game could take a long time though, so don’t expect it to appear elsewhere for at least a year.

How much does Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth cost?

You can get a standard digital or physical copy of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth from £59.99 to £69.99, depending on where you shop.

A Standard Edition digital copy costs £69.99, while a Standard Edition physical copy can be bought from several retailers for about £59.99, including Smyths and Amazon .

Do you have to play Final Fantasy 7 Remake before Rebirth?

No, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is a standalone game and ‘can be enjoyed as your first entry point into the Final Fantasy 7 series,’ according to the PlayStation blog .

However, for the fullest experience it’s best to play Remake first, as Rebirth is a continuation of the same story.

Without getting into spoilers, the Final Fantasy 7 remake trilogy doesn’t mirror the original story entirely. Although it’s generally true to the events of the original game, it breaks away from it at key moments.

Rebirth is based on the section of the original story leading up to the Forgotten Capital, with new elements added in along the way.

Is there a Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth demo?

Yes! If you want to test the game out before buying, you can download a demo via the PlayStation store .

The demo lets you play the opening chapter of the game, in the Nibelheim area, as well as explore the Junon episode that lets you explore more of the open world.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake didn’t have a proper open world area, so that’s one of the most important new additions for Rebirth.
