GTA 6 in ‘final stages’ of development as Rockstar ends work from home policy

Rockstar Games has ordered its developers back to the office, to increase productivity and to avoid any more leaks before the next trailer.

The problems of the last few months, in terms of almost every game publisher announcing massive layoffs, are in large part due to the much longer amount of time, and money, it takes to make a modern game. EA has cut 670 jobs this week and PlayStation laid off 900 ; while the fact that Rockstar owner Take-Two hasn’t announced any cuts yet is worryingly ominous.

So when it’s reported that GTA 6 is in the ‘final stages’ of development it’s not entirely clear what that means, especially as the game isn’t due to come out until next year.

Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom famously enjoyed a year of polish and bug fixing , although whether Rockstar will go that far remains to be seen, although hopefully the poor reception to the GTA: The Trilogy remasters will encourage them to be as cautious as possible with GTA 6.

It’s unclear when exactly full development of GTA 5 began, but it’s thought to be somewhere between 2018 and 2020.

If its final stages are going to last at least 10 months that suggests work may have begun earlier than previously assumed, especially as recent rumours hint at the game being pushed back from a spring 2025 release .

The news comes from Bloomberg reporter Jason Schreier, who claims that employees have been told that they must work from the office for a full five days a week, beginning from April.

Shortly after the release of Red Dead Redemption 2, Rockstar was one of the most prominent names involved in controversy over relying on ‘the crunch’ and unpaid overtime to complete games but it has subsequently made attempts to improve the working conditions for developers.

After the pandemic made working from home essential, many developers have been allowed to continue working solely or primarily from home – which is now common at other games companies.

According to the Bloomberg report , the decision was made for ‘productivity and security reasons’. So far, very little information has leaked out about GTA 6, despite the infamous Rockstar hack , which provided little substantial information.

The GTA 6 reveal trailer did leak early, but only by a few hours and certainly didn’t dappen enthusiasm for the official debut.

‘Making these changes now puts us in the best position to deliver the next Grand Theft Auto at the level of quality and polish we know it requires, along with a publishing roadmap that matches the scale and ambition of the game,’ said Rockstar head of publishing Jenn Kolbe in an email to employees.

Technically this is just a rumour, but Rockstar Games senior game designer Alec McNamara replied to Schreier’s initial tweet by saying, ‘Jason do you live in our walls or something?’ Which seems to confirm that the story is accurate.
