Microsoft is reportedly planning to launch a new white digital-only version of its Xbox Series X console, which comes with new features.

After months of rumours regarding a redesigned Xbox Series X, it seems a revised version of the console is indeed coming out in time for Christmas.

Last year, leaked Microsoft documents revealed plans for an ‘adorably all-digital’ revamp of the Xbox Series X planned for 2024. The console, codenamed ‘Brooklin’, boasted more internal storage, faster Wi-Fi and a new cylindrical design.

At the time, Xbox boss Phil Spencer insisted ‘so much has changed’ since the leaked plans were drawn up, but a subsequent rumour suggests a new model of the console could be out as early as June.

According to noted leaker eXtas1s, who has apparently seen ‘confidential footage’ of the console, Microsoft is planning to launch a white-coloured Xbox Series X with no disc drive.

Writing on eXputer , he also claims the console has an improved heatsink, in comparison to the original Xbox Series X.

Aside from those improvements and the colour change, however, it sounds like other aspects of the console will remain the same – suggesting this might be different to the ‘Brooklin’ leak from last year.

The all-digital console is said to be coming out ‘sometime between the upcoming months of June and July’, but it’s noted that ‘there are chances for a slight delay’ in regards to the release date.

Microsoft recently confirmed it has plans to launch ‘more console and controller options’ later this year, so it’s certainly plausible those plans could involve a redesigned console. The company is also rumoured to be working on a Switch style hybrid device for the next gen, although nothing has been confirmed on that front.

Rumours of an all-digital Xbox Series X may spark further concern around the future of physical media on Xbox consoles. Phil Spencer recently addressed the company’s attitude towards physical games following reports that Microsoft had closed down its physical games department amid layoffs earlier this year.

‘We are supportive of physical media, but we don’t have a need to drive that disproportionate to customer demand,’ Spencer said.

‘We ship games physically and digitally, and we’re really just following what the customers are doing. And I think our job in running Xbox is to deliver on the things that a majority of the customers want. And right now, a majority of our customers are buying games digitally.’

In the same interview, Spencer also expressed concerns around the costs of consoles sporting a disc drive – which could be a not-so-subtle indication of where Microsoft is steering in terms of its future hardware plans.

There’s currently no indication of whether the newly redesigned console will be cheaper than the current model. In theory it should be, though, by at least £40, because of the lack of a disc drive.
