Games Inbox: Nintendo going multiformat, Bloodborne on PS6, and Mother 3 on Switch

Games Inbox: Nintendo going multiformat, Bloodborne on PS6, and Mother 3 on Switch
Nintendo may end up the last of their kind (Picture: Nintendo)

The Friday letters page is confused about PlayStation’s position on multiplatform gaming , as one reader doesn’t hate Suicide Squad.

Last man standing Given recent announcements , it sort of feels like Nintendo may end up being the only end-to-end console manufacturer.

One possible potential future may be Microsoft and Sony gaming divisions joining up?

If there becomes less distinction between exclusive games, what’s the point having an exclusive console?

Other than a few Mario and Donkey Kong ports very early on, and some really rubbish CD-i games. Nintendo have always been exclusive to their own kit.

They might have played the better end game. Gone through two crashes relatively unscathed, and rich. Si

Oh Mother I wasn’t particularly fussed about the Nintendo Partner Direct , so I didn’t bother watching it, but I was pleasantly surprised to read that five old Rare games are being added to subscriptions that I already pay for, particularly Blast Corps as I’ve never played it and it sounds interesting.

Mother 3 being added to the Japanese Game Boy Advance app is the most exciting news for me though. I’m not a huge role-playing fan but love the first two and have never played this one before. How long I’m prepared to slog through it using a guide or translating everything on my phone could be the killer though, I suspect it will be a massive slog if I want to see it through. John Atkinson

GC: It was a surprisingly good Direct, we’d recommend watching it.

Stick it A thought occurred to me. Instead of continuing with discs, the next gen could use USB drives. USB is a standard that isn’t going anywhere. I’d be happy to use one to install games off. It saves a lot of time as it would still be faster than downloading for most of us.

They are also very cheap and can hold a lot of data. They would also need a box to keep them safe so that keeps the shelf presence and box art in play.

USB, it’s the (possible) future. Bobwallett

Dead on arrival I’ve been playing Suicide Squad and whilst I don’t hate the game, I can’t help but wish it was something else. The first few hours of the game I really enjoyed. That first encounter with Batman, with the music ripped straight from Nolan’s Batman movies, was excellent. Which leads me to the game’s biggest failing: I would rather be playing as the Justice League characters.

Clearly all the live service upgrades necessitated gunplay, hence why we’re left playing as C-list villains. The gameplay isn’t even bad, but it’s the mission structure and repetition which brings down the experience. Traversal is particularly good with King Shark and Deadshot. I intend to play co-op, which should break up some of the monotony.

Some of the story elements are done well, but it isn’t long before you’re reminded you’re playing a live service game. It’s offensively bad at times and jarring against the high production values.

All that said, I’m still enjoying it more than the Avengers game, for what it’s worth. When I reflect upon the Arkham games and their mission variety, it’s perplexing all that creativity has been abandoned. I can’t put all of its shortcomings down to it being live service. It’s such a shame because there are glimpses of brilliance.

I know Rocksteady has plans to deliver updates. But given the mostly negative reception, I suspect we won’t see a redemption story for Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League. The clue was in the title. What were they thinking with the premise? It was never going to go down well with DC fans. Anon

Bless us with blood I’ve had an epiphany. It hit me last night. I’ve figured out that my favourite game of all time has been dethroned. It used to be The Last Of Us. I’m of course speaking, of the first title. It was a marvel in storytelling and character development and was absolutely exceptional. It’s the best game that Naughty Dog’s has made and trumps what Uncharted brought to the table. It still holds up massively, but Bloodborne has taken the crown.

The first time I ever experienced Yharnam it was special and the tone, atmosphere, and gameplay was unlike anything I’d ever played before. It was world’s apart from Dark Souls and it lingers in my memory even today. I still actually remember the duel I had with the impostor named Isofeka at her clinic. I ended up losing, but it was a beautiful war. She wasn’t the actual person, but a crazed duplicate and I decided to challenge her.

It was a long fight but, just as my first time duelling Father Gascoigne, what a time it was. I can even say that despite how memorable Elden Ring is, it doesn’t match, top or improve on what Bloodborne did for gaming as a whole. If The Witcher 3, didn’t release in the same year, I’m sure Bloodborne would have won the top prize. It breaks my heart, that we’ve still not witnessed a remake or a remaster.

I don’t see Sony providing us an explanation anytime soon. No one is asking for a remaster of Until Dawn. No one asked for a remake of The Last Of Us. But if the fans keep wishing for Bloodborne to be remade or even just updated, maybe that’s a call that can’t be ignored. Shahzaib Sadiq

GC: It seems From is hinting at a remake for PlayStation 6 , but that still doesn’t explain why there’s never been a PlayStation 5 patch.

PC only As I have recently beat it, though not the secret worlds mind you, I thought it might be interesting to assess the popularity of Super Mario Bros. Wonder in the 2023 readers’ list of best games . I knew it would rate highly, I certainly found it to be wonderful , myself (ha ha) but I would have bet good money that Baldur’s Gate 3 would have taken the silver and not Mario.

Maybe fourth behind the Resident Evil 4 remake, fifth at the lowest. I say that, not because that’s what the game deserved – after Zelda everything is a much-of-a-muchness, really – but I just thought that Baldur’s Gate 3 had more cultural impact. I was wrong. And I could have lost a lot of money!

This probably means that more of the readership has a Switch than PlayStation 5 and/or PC. I can’t say Mario gets a 10 from me this time round, though. I called it slow before, and I don’t think that was the right word. I think, ‘genteel’ would be more appropriate. It’s perfect for Sunday afternoon play sessions – the Columbo of video games, if you will. And I love Columbo.

It’s just that it only ever got into high gear right at the final level. Everything before that, even the tough sections, were kind of… quaint. Plus, all the encounters with Bowser Jr. were, by Nintendo’s standards, garbage. Thank goodness the final boss was great or I would have been bitterly disappointed. As it is, I’m just somewhat disappointed. Every time I encountered the Koopa sprog I always said afterwards: ‘Oh, is that it?’

To put that into better context, I had also downloaded Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury and got to the first boss in 3D World. Bowser in his pimpmobile! Now that was a fantastic boss! Why did I not get any of that cleverness or theatre until right at the end of Wonder. Huh? Huh, Nintendo?!

Yes, I too am now a bit worried about Princess Peach: Showtime! But, as is always case, we shall have to wait and see. DMR

GC: The majority of people were playing Baldur’s Gate 3 on PC. It seems to have had far less impact on consoles.

Physical proof I see that Pentiment is listed for a physical version on PlayStation 5, Switch and Xbox on Limited Run Games. Also, on Limited Run Games: I don’t know if Galvanised Gamer or any other readers are interested but you can get El Shaddai: Ascension Of The Metatron HD Remaster physical version on Switch until February 25th 2024. Andrew J. PS: I have re-ordered Persona 3 Reload Aigis Edition from Amazon, I hope they put it in a shipping box this time. I have marked it as a gift to myself in the hope it might be treated better and not get damaged like last time. I tried to leave a review on Amazon about it and Amazon censored me, I didn’t swear or anything. Other people were able to post bad reviews about Amazon’s service in sending this game out in no shipping box, and one review actually states, ‘Buy it but not from Amazon’.

Horse’s mouth There was an article on TechRaptor saying that the Sony president was mistranslated and he didn’t say ‘other platforms’ but ‘multiple platforms, such as PC in addition to PlayStation 5.’

The emphasis being in the new translation that PC is part of the original possibly mistranslated ‘other platforms’ and not separate.

Personally, I don’t think Sony are at the point they need to think about releasing on Xbox and Switch, like Microsoft probably need to. Releasing on PlayStation 5, PC, and mobile seems the most likely.

Helldivers 2 is dong so well on PC they’re having to increase the server capacity, as its popularity is causing pretty severe issues. It’s also the most popular Sony released game on Steam with an all-time peak concurrent users of 450,000 players.

Anyone upset, which seems a lot, by Sony’s PC and live service plans will probably want to look away.

Trouble is with Microsoft’s manoeuvres onto PlayStation any statement less than they categorically have no plans to release on Xbox means the speculation will drag on indefinitely. It’s not unreasonable to think they’re leaving the door open if they don’t say otherwise, given the current climate and talk of ‘growth’. Simundo

GC: The phrase ‘other platforms’ is from Sony’s official English translation. If they don’t mean Xbox and/or Switch, when they talk about multiplatform releases, then they are ignoring every opportunity to clarify their position. Even this alternative translation implies more than just PlayStation 5 and PC (you can’t successfully release the same games on mobile, for a multitude of practical and commerical reasons ).

Inbox also-rans That Borderlands movie trailer was actually okay. But by being actually funny, doesn’t that mean it’s a poor adaptation? Especially as there was no dubstep. MJE

I still don’t understand why Sony released the PlayStation VR2, it feels like they did it under duress and have tried to pretend it doesn’t exist ever since. Benson

This week’s Hot Topic The subject for this weekend’s Inbox was suggested by reader Sterling, who asks what is your favourite Xbox or PlayStation exclusive?

It’s obvious where this idea came from but, ignoring Nintendo for now, what is your favourite game published by Microsoft or Sony, regardless of whether they made it or not? For clarification, that means Final Fantasy 7 Remake, for example, doesn’t count, but Bloodborne and Microsoft Flight Simulator do.

How important do you feel exclusives are and have you ever bought a console primarily based on the exclusive games available for it? Do you think exclusives are unfair or a necessity for consoles to distinguish themselves from the competition?
