Last week, Casino.org reported that a federal judge sided with the casino owned and operated by Caesars Entertainment, that picketing workers can’t strike directly in front of the property’s entrance. Judge James Patrick Hanlon in Southern Indiana’s US District Court ruled that the casino had the legal right to ask law enforcement to threaten the picket line with trespassing charges.

Hanlon agreed that the property where the workers are striking doesn’t constitute public property. They were therefore ordered to relocate to the parking lot across N. Michigan Road.

Customer Complaints, Strike Continues

The Teamsters Local 185 picket line was previously on the opposite side of N. Michigan, adjacent to the casino and its parking garage. Casino.org heard from some guests who complained that the strike was impeding their access to the gaming facility that has 1,500 slots, 65 table games, and a Caesars Sportsbook.

We’re innocent people who just want to play slots,” said one person to Casino.org.

The strike involves about 200 table-game dealers and dual-rate workers who occasionally work as floor supervisors. The coalition seeks to unionize with the Teamsters chapter.

They should be moved. The last two times I was trying to leave the casino, they walked in front of my car and sat there with a bullhorn in my ear,” read another. “If people aren’t happy with their job, why don’t they just get another? Seems like common sense to me.”

Table games remain operational amid the strike as dealers picket during their off-hours. Caesars has also brought in temporary dealers to cover open shifts.

Caesars refused to allow an independent third-party auditor to conduct the union vote during the federal government shutdown, which halted actions by the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB). With the government back open, the NLRB is expected to conduct the tally in the coming weeks.

Teamsters Local 135 already represents other Horseshoe Indianapolis employees, including slot attendants.

Weekend Rally

Over the weekend, the ongoing Horseshoe Indianapolis strike kept spirits high with live music. Teamsters members working at UPS stopped by to play country music classics from the likes of Hank Williams.

On Saturday, the picket line held a “Labor Day in November” event where union reps and members were welcomed. The “cookout in solidarity” was attended by Teamsters officials, workers, and their families, as the casino workers “fight for union recognition.”

The union claims at least one worker has been wrongfully terminated from Horseshoe Indianapolis amid the strike. Teamsters officials say a casino floor supervisor who participated in the picket off-hours was terminated without explanation.
