Swindon has its own GTA clone, albeit one full of frogs and child friendly violence, with a full launch scheduled for the coming months.
While the GTA games have consistently taken place throughout the US, there was one time where Rockstar Games tried its hand at a London setting via two expansion packs for the very first entry in the series.
Since then, though, there’s never been a proper attempt at a UK-centric GTA game, with Rockstar co-founder Dan Houser explaining recently that it’s because ‘there was so much Americana inherent in the IP.’
So, we must turn to other studios for British takes on the GTA formula and, as it turns out, one such example – one set in the town of Swindon – has been available in early access for over a decade and is now primed to launch in the coming months.
Titled Amazing Frog? (yes, with a question mark), it’s in development at a studio called Fayju and is very much billed as GTA Swindon, with its open world playground including a full recreation of Swindon’s town centre.
It’s also notably more kid friendly than GTA since you play as a cartoon frog and has a focus on wacky physics akin to something like Goat Simulator. Not to mention a lot of toilet humour.
‘Use bonkers physics to throw ridiculous, farting ragdoll frogs all around town and beyond the city walls,’ reads its Steam listing. ‘Explore Swindonshire and unlock new worlds, skins, weapons, vehicles and challenges in the Quest for the Magical Mystery Toilet!’

There’s still a degree of violence as you can wield guns and drive vehicles to run over other frogs (and other players in co-op), but the game seems completely devoid of blood otherwise.
Amazing Frog? entered early access on Steam back in 2014 and, in a recent update, Fayju has said that it aims to have the full version out by the end of the year. If not, then January 2026 at the latest.
Fayju hasn’t specified how the game will differ from the early access version, especially when it’s seen consistent updates over the past 11 years, but it’s pledged to ‘keep updating the game forever.’
In a statement to Swindon Advertiser, Fayju co-founder Gaz Bushell says, ‘Back in 2012, we looked out of the window of our tiny studio above the Wyvern Theatre in Swindon and thought, ‘Yeah, let’s build that. But like GTA – with frogs.’ That was the moment Amazing Frog? was born.
‘For us, Amazing Frog? has always been a place to experiment. A world that keeps growing with every idea that makes us laugh or surprises us. We’ve spent the last decade improving the world and the gameplay systems, polishing the chaos, and giving Swindon the love and absurdity it deserves.’
Recently, the studio released a paid work-in-progress version for Xbox consoles as well as a free trial. Plus, there are plans for PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch versions, but there’s no word on when those will be out.
