Boyd Gaming, owners of the Eastside Cannery Casino, have greenlit the old building’s demolition.
The building itself had been constructed after the demolition of the old Nevada Palace
They have begun distancing themselves from the casino and seem to have set their sights on selling the plot, which will be left behind by the casino after the demolition, for the development of urban housing.
A spokesperson for Boyd has this to share about their plans for the building: “Currently in discussions to sell the site for residential use.”
The casino itself, alongside everyone else, has had its doors closed since the COVID-19 lockdown, which began in 2020, and has not been open to visitors since.
Over 5 years have passed since the closing, with no signs it will ever open again.
Back in 2024, Boyd renewed the Eastside Cannery Casino’s gaming license; however, the building has remained closed.
Instead of reopening it, Boyd had chosen to attract tourists to their other closely located casino, Sam’s Town Casino, which had already taken in all of the visitors from the Eastside Cannery Casino anyway.
Boyd has shared why they felt no need to open the casino :
“It has been more than five years since we closed Eastside Cannery, and there is not sufficient market demand to reopen the facility.”
History of the Casino
In 2016, Boyd acquired the casino’s parent company, Cannery Casino Resorts, alongside which came the Eastside Cannery Casino as well as the North Las Vegas-based Cannery Casino and Hotel.
Their northern counterpart has become known for its atmosphere akin to a cannery in the Second World War.
One year after construction of the casino had begun in 2007, the Eastside Cannery Casino was ready to open its doors in 2008 and welcome visitors.
Other Unfortunate Casinos
Boyd Gaming isn’t the only one who have been forced to close down a casino.
Red Rock Results have suffered a similar fate.
They were forced to sell three of their properties;those properties were later demolished as well.
The three properties in question are: Fiesta Henderson, Fiesta Rancho, and Texas Station.
Meanwhile, a casino owned by Golden Entertainment called the Colorado Belle has yet to open its doors since COVID.
